Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites - Marina

Reviewed 26 August 2013

We arrived late since we were not used to driving with out street lights. The property seemed well maintained. A couple more parking spaces would be helpful.
Was not greeted as an IHG rewards member.
Arrived to a dark room. Wanted to put a few drinks in the fridge, ours was removed. Called the fd to ask if we were ours was and she said only their suites had fridges. When u opened the cabinet door where the fridge should be, there was dust bunnys. After they removed the fridge they couldn't even clean under it!
Mattress is barely better than the ones you would find on a sofa sleeper. On the thin side where you could feel the springs.
The next day, housekeeping forgot to put back hand towels. I reported it to the fd and he told me if I wanted any I would have to go get them. After coming back from a long day at the first city music festival, running back to the lobby was the last thing on my mind.
Normally, I trust the holiday inn brand but I would look else where next time in the area. Customer service is not their top priority.

Room Tip: Spa n fitness room is on the first floor.

We really liked this alternative location for visiting Monterey. Only a few minutes up the highway but more affordable. Quick to the highway, beach and convenience shopping (Walmart), yet seemed very quiet. The breakfast bar is average for this level of hotel. The desk staff is friendly. Our bill was incorrect, but fixed quickly. Drawback: no pool. Advantage: washer/dryer on site. This worked well for us in the middle of our 10 day CA trip.

The hotel advertises a guarantee low price on their website but they will not honor the low price. The front desk wants to charge $50 over the internet price because the low price is wrong on their web site. We file complaint against Holiday Inn Express and the manager respond the complaint as "miss communication" This hotel commits fraud and no one is held accountable of their illegal activities.

Dear lekhoi_2000,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on your stay. It is unfortunate issues with the pricing structure prevented you from staying at the hotel. We are pleased to see you have contacted our Customer Care department, and they were able to address your concerns.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express at Marina to take part in a family gathering and decided to come up 1 day earlier to spend a little time by ourselves. We found the facilities to be excellent and the staff was very friendly and helpful. They helped us print driving directions to some of the last minute places we decided to visit. The complementary breakfast was very tastey with quite a variety to chose from. The rooms were clean and comfortable and included a flat screen TV, a fairly large refridgerator (for a hotel) and a microwave. We spent a great deal of time in the large spa in the mornings and evenings. Everything was great for the most part, except for the major road construction the was going on outside our room during the day and the problem we had with our room keys. every afternoon or evening after we returned from our daily adventures we found that our room keys no longer worked. This was a minor problem and was easily resolved.
All in all I would have to say that it was a pleasant stay.

This was a very disappointing hotel. My wife and I chose the King Suite with separate bedroom and sofabed because when I snore too loudly, one of us can sleep in the other room. The sofabed was incredibly uncomfortable. We know there are much better sofabeds because we had a pretty comfortable one in Napa the night before. When we told the front desk person the next morning she was argumentative, saying "the sofabed is not advertised for sleeping," "we don't recommend sleeping on it" and "you're not paying for the furniture in the room." Really? Why have a sofabed if you don't recommend sleeping on it. It must be the cheapest available. And they certainly do advertise the sofabed as a room amenity on their website. They did try to improve it the next night by lining the mattress with a blanket or 2, but you could still feel springs, etc. Wifi never connected me to the internet (I eventually disabled it on my phone and just used the cell service for internet because it was WAY faster.) They didn't replace soap on the 2nd day and walls were very thin (noisy). I would never stay here again.

Clean basic predictable HI Express quality, which is what I expected (and I have had 200+ hotel nights the past 10 years). Enjoyed most the flat screen TV with well over 100 channels; a coffee pot that makes 4 cups (though hotel brand coffee not high quality); and separate switches in the bathroom for the light and for the fan (so you don’t have to hear a loud fan all the time).
Annoyances included cardboard cups for coffee (but I bring my own porcelain cup) and a bright green light by the door that functions as a motion detector. The green light was a shock in a dark room but I suppose it could guide you to the exit door in case of fire. (My wife thought it was helpful as a night light but I found the brightness alarming.)

Our room had a great mini frig and microwave. Not sure if this is in all rooms or an upgrade for my Platinum Ambassador status. It also had a pleasing view of the park behind the hotel. Suggest you request 2nd floor or above with a park view. (Note the hotel is built on a small hill, so the registration desk is actually on the 2nd floor too.)

Breakfast included hot and cold items and was well stocked and replenished frequently. Complimentary newspapers (both local and USA Today) were at our door in the morning. Free wireless internet code was provided.

Hotel is easily reached off Hwy 1 (Reservation Road exit) and is next door to a WalMart and a gas station. It is not a place you would stay all day but rather use as a base for exploring other more interesting nearby beaches and towns. The Marina beach is about a mile away but was very windy on the sunny 70 degree day we visited. Downtown Marina is less than a half mile away for basic supplies and several modest restaurants. We found the hotel rates lower than nearby Monterey and Pacific Grove which allowed us to make the short drive into Monterey and splurge on a pricier dinner.

Room Tip: Suggest you request 2nd floor or above with a park view

Obviously the people who lavish praise on this property rarely stay at hotels. One reviewer writes , " I was greeted by the smell of freshly baked cookies...". Sure , if one just happens to arrive in the lobby at about 3pm when they are put out. If one shows up past 5 pm there is no "fresh smell of cookies" nor any to be had. Being a Platinum member with Holiday Inn I really think this property is more like a Comfort Inn.
I stayed 5 nites for business in July 2013. The soap in room was not replaced or refreshed for 3 days. The toilet paper is so cheap it disintegrates in your hands. Even the sugar substitute at the coffee station is not Equal or Sweet n Low , but Kirkland (Costco Brand). I have never seen that at a Holiday Inn Express yet...and I stay at over 60 of them a year.
One of my collegues was told when checking in that his last nite stay would be $500/nite. He had a reservation that showed that last nite, on a holiday weekend, was at a rate of $250 (still a ripoff). He was told he would need to talk to the manager about it . All the front desk person had to do was look at the reservation on the hotel system, which is what the manager did, and it would not have been an issue. Was he trying to a guest ?
Unfortunately this property is owned by a group that wants to maximize profit at the expense of the guests. They should not be in the hospitality business,
