We have stayed here twice and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. We originally stayed at this hotel because all of the hotels in Monterey were either sold out or had extremely high rates ($150+/night). We were not expecting too much but the hotel proved to be a nice suprise. The front desk staff were very nice and accommodating and the rooms were absolutely spotless and much bigger than a typical regular room in Monterey. The indoor spa and weight room were also very nice, would have liked to have had an indoor pool as well but that is okay. The hotel is off Highway 1 a fair amount so you are away from the highway noise even though some rooms are close to the adjacent street, but I never heard anyone else complain and our room was on that side as well (closer to the middle where the elevators are though).

The complimentary breakfast is okay, a typical one for a Holiday Inn Express, but again a rarity in the Monterey area. There is not much around in terms of eating, mainly a Denny's and a Jack In The Box so plan ahead. However the location is a plus because you are still only a 10 minute drive away from Monterey and a 15 minute drive away from Carmel, plus there is a great public beach literally within walking distance of the hotel (less than 5 minute drive). I would definately recommend taking advantage of this beach as it is more of a local beach and is much less crowded the Carmel and Monterey's famous beaches (warning: have fun trying to find a place to park in Carmel on a Saturday). I was able to get my morning workout running to and from the beach everyday. Seeing the beach alone makes working out very easy. :)

My only complaint is that the indoor spa area, like other reviews have mentioned, has a bird problem. Since it opens to the outside, some birds have taken a liking to the area, and sometimes you will see some bird poop in the area. It is very minimal but every now and then. As much as it is nice that it opens to the outside, this might be something they might want to change to combat the problem.

Overall though the location for this hotel is great, the staff is very accommodating, and the overall hotel is in great shape. If you are looking for a more reasonable hotel than the ones in Monterey or heck if you are just visiting the Monterey Bay area period, definitely consider this hotel!

This Holiday Inn Express does not meet the chain's quality standards, which are generally consistent at its many properties. While the building it nice, new, and close to the stock HIE 3-floor design, it is poorly cared for.

During our two-day stay we found the hallways untidy, the carpet stained, litter in the
stairwells left uncleaned for two days, the eastern exit a staff hangout featuring overflowing ashtrays and litter, and a breakfast room extremely poorly tended. In the case of the breakfast bar, a near-full hotel is no excuse for running out of many items by 8:30 am and leaving tables uncleared indefinitely. Moreover, the staff member assigned to these tasks lacked the people skills needed to work with guests. On top of this, the toilet in our room worked worked inconsistently. The only bright spot here was the morning receptionist who, upon hearing of these problems, was apologetic and conciliatory.

The hotel's location is central to the Monterey Bay area and within walking distance of the spectacular dunes and beach. However, Marina itself is a bit scruffy. Acceptable eating options are few. Only Francisco's (Italian dishes) proved worthwhile. The hotel, on a wide but generally underused road, backs on to a small park centred on a large pond. A resident flock of geese added some colour to an evening walk.

Unfortunately, the visible problems with this hotel mean that we would try elsewhere next time we are in the Monterey Bay area.

Stayed here for a couple nights. The location is nice, it's very close to a walmart, and about a mile or less from hwy 1. The staff was very nice and tried to accomodate us in every way. The continental breakfast was very good, hot cheesy eggs, sausage, bacon, bagels, biscuits, etc... Lots of good stuff. Sometimes they also have free (delicious!) cookies at the front desk. The hot tub was nice and large. They have a bad pigeon problem in there outdoor hot tub area though with a lot of feces and stuff around there. They just need to find a better way to keep the pigeons out of there. Our room was facing the main road and it was a little loud at night, but not too bad.

We stayed at this hotel for a couple of nights and we really enjoyed our stay. Nothing to complaint about. the hotel looked brand new to me. I was surprised when they told me it is 8 yrs. old. It is about 10 mins. away from downtown Monterey. It looks like it was on a lonely area but it is a short distance from a Wal Mart, and several fast foods.
I would stay there if I go back to this area.
