“A peaceful haven”
Reviewed 7 July 2013

I am not going to write a long review as it has all been said. What a beautiful, amazing, peaceful place to stay. It was so relaxing - we highly recommend it. Dan, Kim and Mary Ellen were all lovely. The breakfast was incredible and the little snacks during the day were thoughtful. They were also very helpful with where to go for dinner and other tips for travellers.

From the moment we arrived we knew we made a good decision based on all the excellent reviews prior. The outside of the home has plenty of lounging space to sit and relax and enjoy the country air (watch out for mosquitos). The inside and rooms are clean and comfortable and full of character. The proprietors go out of their way to make your stay great whether it's leaving out wine and cheese in the evening after returning from a long yosemite hike, or cooking a delicious breakfast in the morning. My only regret was that we didn't stay longer and have not driven to yosemite to just enjoy the bed and breakfast. Overall a great deal close to yosemite and would definitely recommend. However we did find the windy hour and a bit drive through the mountains to yosemite one way to be hard to do especially after a 9 hour hike. So if u plan to do a lot in yosemite on multiple days you may want to stay a little closer.

After reading so many wonderful reviews about Poppy Hill and the gracious people who own and run it, my wife and I made reservations to stay three night there on our visit to Yosemite.

What a glorious three nights it was. Mary Ellen, her son Dan, her friends Kim and McKenna made our stay an absolutely delightful experience.

From the hardy home cooked breakfasts every morning (without it we would not have been able to climb Vernal Falls) to wine and cheese ready for us after a day of hiking at Yosemite, to fresh pie and cookies for late night returns, it was all about simple pleaures and incredible hospitality.

Poppy Hill is very small, only three rooms (a 4th room on the ground floor is currently being readied). Each room is uniquely designed with antiques and fond memories of a time long past. But it's the people who make Poppy Hill the truly unforgettable experience we will always remember and smile about.

Mary Ellen, thank you for sharing your home with us..

Room Tip: Take your pick. They are all so very wonderful.

Poppy Hill offers true American hospitality in a glorious rural location...but beware, you may start feeling like part of the family!  This is a great B&B. Amazing breakfasts, a glass of wine on arrival and as much or as little friendly chit chat as you'd like in between. Our host at the time, Dan, kindly left out snacks and breakfast when we were heading out pre 6am one day, and we had freshly baked cookies in a ziplock bag to take for our day in the park. The family running Poppy Hill are thoughtful, friendly and great people to spend time with!
The guesthouse is in the leafy fotthills outside Mariposa, surrounded by a lovingly tended garden. The location is about 35 miles from Yosemite; a longish drive but very doable. On our searches, the closer options were substantially more expensive or more camp/hostel style. Poppy Hill is also handy to Mariposa, which has restaurants and amenities you can take advantage of.
There is also a great screened porch and hot tub - perfect for relaxing after long hikes in Yosemite.

Poppy Hill is nothing short of perfection. Travelling with my mother, we sought out somewhere close to Yosemite National Park, but cheap and quiet enough to avoid the summer crowds. Poppy Hill was the answer to EVERYTHING! Stunning gardens complete with hot tub, close to a quaint little town (with a GREAT diner) but off the beaten track so as to make it quiet, and yet still a comfortable 45 mins drive to Yosemite. Darlene made an incredible array of breakfast items, including her specialty - eggs picante, as well as bacon, pancakes, fruits, teas, coffees and much more every morning. We were made to feel incredibly comfortable in this beautiful home - arriving back late from Yosemite one night, muddy, tired and resembling grizzly bears, we entered the home to find biscuits, wine and cheeses on the table, accompanied by a little note personally wishing us a restful sleep. The beds were comfy, everything was clean and well kept, and the views were gorgeous. AMAZING place to stay!

We stayed there a couple of nights last October on the back to San Francisco from Yosemite. All the praise on Tripadvisor is more than justified. Much nicer to stay here than in Yosemite itself (with its health risks!). Mary Ellen recommended some lovely places in Mariposa to eat (Charles Street Dinner House great, nicer than Savoury's which is all big business hustler and bustle, both in the centre). You'll need to take a cab if you want to have drink. Just beware: some of these other establishments are not anywhere near the village centre at all!
