“Fabulous hideaway near to Yosemite”
Reviewed 25 September 2008

This is a wonderful bed and breakfast and was a little oasis during our California trip. Situated about 8 miles from Mariposa, this lovely property is accessed up a short track from the main road (instructions were very good). Beautifully furnished and with everything you could want, we spent a peaceful evening watching deer, wild turkeys and humming birds in the grounds. Snacks and drinks were freely available as was internet access and games and TV. Our "Forest Retreat" was a sumptuous but cosy suite. Exceptionally clean, fabulous bathroom and great big cosy bed! Nora provided a lovely hot breakfast accompanied by fruit and pancakes and lots of juice and coffee. We were really sorry to leave!

We have high expectation of the B&B after seeing so many positive reviews and are glad that it certainly has lived up to all the merits ! We stayed 2 nights in Forest View Room and enjoyed every minute of it. Mike certainly made us felt at home with all the snacks / nuts / fruits lying around the kitchen. We are also pleasantly surprised to see that it has free internet / computer with wifi even though our mobile phones have no reception. (Well, we are really in the forest after all !)

Our 4-year old boy certainly has a good time there feeling very at home walking up and down the stairs and playing the swing outside the house. Also nice to have breakfast with many wild animals (humming-birds, deer, squirrels) just outside. Location is not too much of a problem - Mariposa is a nice little town with good eating places / supermarkets. We only have one whole day to explore Yosemite and managed to have a good look at it by entering through Oak Tree Entrance and leaving in South Entrance.

We spent 3 lovely nights here whilst visiting Yosemite. Our only regret was that we didn't have more time to spend enjoying the lovely house and grounds. We stayed in the Forest retreat room which was beatiful - lovely vaulted celiling, fireplace, plenty of room and a huge bathroom. Also great breakfasts to set you up for a days sightseeing in Yosemite. The only downside was that it was about 50 minutes from both the west and south park entrances - but it's a nice drive.

This quaint little house is nestled in the hills of sequoias and lush woods. The owner Mike is very hospitable and makes you feel right at home. This is a great place to stay. After spending a full day in Yosemite or any of the many other local attractions, you come "home" to the Highland House and can sit and enjoy a cup of hot tea in the large den or you can play pool, throw darts or watch one of the hundreds of movies in his recreation room. It was a great place to unwind after eventful days of exploring. The bedrooms are very cozy with comfortable large beds and the private bathrooms are very clean. In the mornings, you wake up to the fresh aromas of freshly brewed coffee and scrumptious hearty breakfasts that keep you full and energized all day. Mike has a full-time cook who is very warm and welcoming that makes breakfast meals that are out of this world. I can't say enough about how wonderful our stay was here at the Highland house. We will definitely come back when in the area next and also recommend to our friends and family. This place really added to our wonderful memories of the Mariposa/Yosemite area.

  • Liked — friendly accomodating owner/cook, great scenary, comfortable clean rooms/bathrooms, close proximity to national parks
  • Disliked — cell phone reception is terrible

We stayed here as part of a two week trip round California. This B&B deserves its high rating. The rooms are lovely as is the house. There is a lot of space in the house for guests and you have all the wildlife right there - esp. the deer and hummingbirds. Breakfast was a treat with fresh fruit and hot options. Mike was a great host with tips for eating and where to go. Thanks for a great stay - wish it had been for longer.

After my third stay at Highland House in June (I’ve also been there in the spring and fall), I don’t know which times I liked best. If you’re from the central California valley like I am, summer at Highland (4,000 feet) is 10 degrees cooler than Fresno. The summer animals are wonderful – several species of birds including a wild turkey mamma a two chicks, and as I looked up from reading my book on the lounge on the lawn a full-grown deer had snuck into the lower meadow just 30 feet from me and looked directly at me as if to say, “Peace, brother. I am here to nibble.”

Inside the dining room with my camera next to chin I faced the wall then stepped sideways in front of the window and caught a hummingbird on the other side of the window in mid air next to the feeder. We were two feet away from each other. Click, and again, click, 15 more times. Wow! One had emerald feathers on its back and tail. Another had a golden rust head that seemed to reflect the flames of the sun. The resonance of their high speed wings and bodies frozen in space is truly poetic. I am going to try to include a close-up of one and one of a gray fox on the back step looking back at the camera. One night a red fox with a really long bushy tale came up to the back door.

However, I like the spring and fall when there are no other guests and I pretend the house is all mine forever.

Free laundry, good food, refrigerator for guests, and much more.
