Description: The “story” of the modern Gold Coin Restaurant and Tavern is very complex. I guess the history of the “Coin” and its home in the old Fremont Adobe is not simple either. That’s why the term “Where History Lives” is most appropriate.Linda, and her sister Betty, had a dream. A Sports Tavern in Mariposa. Several years ago, Betty was killed in a motorcycle accident and Linda decided to fulfill their dream. Then it happened! She talked with Helen Kwalwasser, who was restoring the old Fremont Adobe building, built in 1849-50, as the headquarters for the Las Mariposas mining properties, has a colorful past. The original “Gold Coin Bar” was originally established shortly after prohibition ended, by the Greenamyer brothers with proceeds from their lucky strike at the old Gold Coin Mine in northern Mariposa County. After being abandoned for more than 20 years, Helen took on the massive task of restoring this historic Mariposa icon. All she needed was a tenant and along came Linda. The “Coin” is like no other dining and beverage experience in the Mother Lode area; perhaps in the West. The atmosphere gives the “historic” feel of the time when this building was in its prime. The gold mines are gone with little to remind us of this colorful part of our western heritage but the “Coin” is here and thriving! There are those who say that the “spirits” of those early pioneers, prospectors and minors are still among us. We won’t argue. We think that those spirits are alive and well and have played a major role in why the “Coin” is what it is today! As Bob likes to say, we are the “brush” and I can only suspect who is controlling the “hand”!

“Good food and atmosphere”

Definitely one of the best place to eat in the limited offer you can find in Mariposa. We went there twice, and we found consistent quality and service. QUite good value for money.

“Just what we needed”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

Mariposa is crowded in July so anywhere you go for food requires patience. We were a little short on that after hiking Half Dome that day and just wanted a good burger and lots of water. Kimberly at the bar welcomed us to order from there and was very friendly and efficient under stressful, busy demand while we were there. If every server hustled and worked as smartly as she does there would never be any complaints. Our party of 4 enjoyed tasty burgers and taco salads and everyone was pleased. There was quite a line waiting for tables as we left, an we were very glad we had slipped in when we did and would recommend the Gold Coin for good bar food!

“They Try Hard; However...”
Reviewed 4 August 2014

This seemed to be a really busy restaurant and the menu looked pretty good so we tried it. When we walked in the place was full and there were 2 older women drinking at the bar. One of them turned out to be the owner/waitress (still not sure) and the other a former waitress. We were seated after ~15 minutes and after another 15 someone took our order. My son's hamburger was pink to bloody and my steak was very well done; the opposite of what we ordered. After waiting an hour, we just dealt with it because we were starving. I showed the waiter and he was truly apologetic. He didn't charge me for the glass of wine and offered to give us desserts free. I didn't get one but my husband and son did. In the end, the overworked waiter really stepped up and took care of the mistakes that the other employees made. I'd try the restaurant again if I were in town but choose a less busy time.

“Cute building, Fast food style meals with slow service......”
Reviewed 3 August 2014

I do say the interior of the building is nice, but if you like basically frozen food fried, then this is your place. Not much to offer then fast food style dishes,My family tried other meals on the menu that hopefully was not just a fried bag food and hoping for freshly cooked. I tried the hamburger, tasted like it was cooked hours ago and just warmed up. Just not impressed with any of the meals
we had. The service was slow and addi
