“Alright - Mediocre”
Reviewed 28 August 2007

I was somewhat pleasantly surprised by this place. We booked at the last minute for a trip to Yosemite, and I was worried this place was going to be a complete dump. It wasn't

It's a basic hotel with friendly front desk people at check-in/out. The room was decent size and clean. Beds aren't real comfortable.

TV channels were limited. Not that it mattered much, some basic news and weather were good enough. Didn't try the Internet connection.

Breakfast is nothing exceptional, but it's alright if you can get by on some danishs, toast, cereal and apples.

The pool is pretty small, again not something we used.

My only complaint about this place was the distance to Yosemite was quite long. Approx 1 hr drive. Especially when we stayed at the park into the evening. Driving the long trip on Hwy 140 (winding, mountainous road) in the dark is a big downer.

My next visit I'll be trying to stay somewhere in the park or closer to the park. In a pinch though this place was alright.

  • Liked — That I could get a room on short notice
  • Disliked — The drive to Yosemite is longer than I'd prefer.

The Best Western Yosemite Way Station, Mariposa, CA, was very accommodating for our ventures into Yosemite N.P. The room was very clean and accommodating. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast room was in another building which offered a nice large area to sit and enjoy a good breakfast. My only complaint about this Hotel is the high price for an average room. (This was the most expensive accommodations during our trip to Central CA {Mariposa/Sacrament/San Francisco} .)

Reading the reviews only after I booked this hotel made me sceptical and I was close to cancelling my booking again

From the outside the hotel looks like an old militairy barrack but inside it's not bad and the room # 327 at the back was dark but clean and recently furbished. Internet access is slow/not possible and cell phone coverage is also limited coming from Europe. (close to Chevron gasstation the cellphone worked)

The price and location are OK for visiting Yosemite, in ~ one hour one can reach the valley floor even with the detour on highway 140. The entry via the 140 is the easiest drive of all 4 main entrances to the park.

The Chinese restaurant opposite the hotel is very good and so are the ladies at the frontdesk of the BW.

  • Liked — Price and proximity to Yosemite Park
  • Disliked — The plastic/styropor at the breakfast

This hotel was excellent for getting to Yosemite in the morning. The room we had could have easily slept 4 and if you did it that way would be even better value for money. It was very clean and large and even had a pool. The hotel is opposite a parade of shops which include a chinese takeaway and a pizzeria, both of which serve tasty and cheap meals. The tourist info place up the road have good tips on visiting Yosemite. The only downside was the prevalence of polystyrene! The free breakfast had to be eaten out of polystyrene cup, bowls and plates. It was too much for us and bad for the environment too!

  • Liked — Location
  • Disliked — polystyrene

Location - about an hour's drive from Yosemite. But in April, Mariposa was the safest bet outside Yellowstone in April, as the hwy 140 leading into the park has lesser delays and snow than the other entrances. The town itself has a few services which makes it a better place than El Portal which had a couple of lodges and a single restaurant. But, remember that this place is over an hours drive. So allow adequate time if you need to make it to Yosemite for an early morning appointment.

Rooms - We got a decent room with a noisy heater unit - the old fashioned one. Beds were queen sized and not the most comfortable, but generally what you expect from a BW. The TV in the room was not working and no idea on how to get the Internet. Rooms were clean and so were the bathrooms, if you ignore a few mildew patches here and there.

Service - The staff was courteous on check-in and check-out. They were also helpful with local information. However, they were indiferrent when I pointed to them that the TV was not getting a good reception. They said it could be the new satellite cable system they had installed and they didn't know much about it. the lady at the front desk suggested that I check the connections myself and fix it if I can. I would have expected an apology of some sort for the loss of service. I finally ended up fixing the problem myself.

Food - Mariposa is a small town with very few small restaurants. There are a fewer options for vegetarians - pizza and mexican place. The hotel offers free continental breakfast consisting of the usual cereal, bread, pasteries and milk or orange juice. Not the most wholesome breakfast but enough for a good start. There was a hair in the milk pitcher placed on the breakfast table. When I pointed out, the staff member immediately disposed the spoilt milk with a newer pitcher.

Tip - Visit the information center at the other end of the town. It is open quite late (8 pm) and provides brochures for Yosemite and local information. In April, quite a few of the services were not open and the lady at the information center guided us to the right places.

The hotel itself is about an hour drive from the Yosemite so it's not particularly close. Our room was fine and clean enough, decent amount of space and a couch but it was also pretty expensive. There were very few TV channels and there was no internet (contrary to Best Western's promises) except for the paid terminal downstairs. We couldn't dial up our own provider because there was no local phone area code, either!

Breakfast was nothing special and we had to ask for the yogurts to be replenished even though an employee was sitting right there. There was a pool but we didn't use it.
