“A magical place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 May 2013

We stayed at Nick's Cove for one night while driving down Highway One on a road trip to San Francisco on a friend's recommendation and we fell in love with it on first sight. The room was brilliant – although the fact that I insisted on lighting the wood-burning stove in May meant that it was so hot we could hardly breathe. Dinner was delicious and while I normally think cooking oysters is a waste of a good oyster the oyster Nick-o-fellers were sublime. And the barman made us some of the best Negronis we have ever had. We will definitely be back. I have subtracted one star, however, as the receptionist was incredibly crabby in the morning when we inquired where are breakfast had got to. They may well have been busy but that is not our problem and a polite inquiry does not warrant a frankly impolite response. This in no way spoilt our stay but it was unnecessary and foolish – especially from a mature woman who should know better.

Travelling from London, via San fran then up to Mendocino we were tipped off about this unique spot for a great stop off on the way back. Simply charming. We were hoping for a waterfront room but as we only booked the day before we 'settled' for Fly Fishermans, just back from the road. It was lovely, really luxurious, spacious and well equipped. Food in the restaurant was superb. Wine Wednesday was a welcome surprise too! We will be back. Keep up the good work.

Wow Wow Wow - We had heard this place was special but this was spectacular! The most amazing cottage extending right out over the water, charming vintage style w/ modern amenities, for example the large bathroom with claw footed tub had a cozy heated floor under the quaint marble tiles. Lovely sitting area with wood stove, well appointed. Great fresh breakfast, and they brought multiple pots of fantastic coffee each morning. The view... could not have even imagined how beautiful! The bed was so comfortable, slept soundly with the gentle sound of the tide coming in. Everyone at Nick's was friendly and helpful - definitely worth the drive up there and the cost, want to go back soon. Be sure to enjoy all of West Marin, wonderful food, artisans and shopping, hiking, etc.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for one of the cottages extending out over the water - so special!

My husband and I just returned from a spontaneous trip to nicks. What a wonderful little treasure this place turned out to be. We stayed in Al's cabin right on the water. The room was beautifully appointed with lovely decor, beautiful bathroom with heated marble floor and soaking tub, honesty bar that included wine, hard alcohol and snacks. We brought our dog with us on the trip and if he could talk, he would give nicks a stellar review! The staff was so friendly as well. I love that on the end of a long dock connected to the restaurant there is a little boathouse with a fireplace where you can sip drinks, play piano and watch the sunset. The restaurant itself was superb. And the fact that they deliver an amazing breakfast to your cabin in the morning was extra nice. I really loved this place and we will absolutely go back. Having stayed at so many hotels it is so refreshing when a place really pays attention to the little details.

We have stayed at Nicks Cove at least four times. It really is an amazing setting--there is nothing like waking up over Tomales Bay and at night you fall asleep to the sound of the water beneath your room. This is why we keep coming back. Plus, the rooms seem even better than ever. This trip we were in Bandits. The bathrooms, especially the rear one were just amazing, with fabulous details in the tile and tub areas. Just a joy. The front bedroom had such a gorgeous view of the water and the bed could not have been more luxurious.
It is the setting that really makes this place great, but also has its drawbacks. The service was almost non-existent. Perhaps it is hard to hire service conscious people in this remote area. We visited right after New Years the staff seemed exhausted, everyone from the front desk to the restaurant was completely uninterested in provided much service, or even eye contact. At this price, it seemed a bit unprofessional.
Then there was the smell on this trip. I realize the rooms are over water, but the moldy smell was so overwhelming I had to open all of the windows (in January). We tried to start a fire to warm up, but the fire wood they gave us was wet.
Finally, the restaurant was not up to speed. It has been on and off for years. This time service was crazy slow. The oysters were fabulous as were the meat dishes. However, the crab salad, during crab season, had frozen dry crab. It was inedible. Sending it back took forever. Not a fun evening. We had better service at the Marshall store (pretty much self serve, but yummy food).
Nicks really is in an amazing setting and has some fabulous design elements. Too bad some details are so overlooked.

Our visit to Nick’s Cove was really fantastic. We stayed in the Innkeeper’s Cottage, which was large, lovely, and well-appointed room with nautical décor. The room has a full kitchen with a vintage stove and refrigerator, a living area with couch and large flat-screen television, and an adjacent sleeping area with a large comfy bed—the bathroom has a huge tub. Our friends stayed in the Nicholina cottage, which is a renovated boat, small, cozy, and right on the water. When the four of us checked in we were greeted by the friendly and helpful staff and offered some barbecued oysters, which we devoured in the beautiful old bar with some excellent drinks. The restaurant and bar are right on the bay and the food is outstanding, specializing of course, on seafood. Morning dawned with a beautiful sunny day and the bay was shimmering. We had our complimentary continental breakfast delivered to our room for all four of us, enhanced with very reasonably priced egg dishes. The muffins were fantastic.

Nick’s Cove is a wonderful place for a getaway and would make a great location for a multi-day stay. Hog Island Oyster Company is very close and you can buy oysters in bulk like we did and enjoy a picnic shucking oysters and drinking some good white wine. Point Reyes Station is just a short drive down the coast with many shops, restaurants, and an outstanding bookstore. The countryside is beautiful with green hills and dairy cows in abundance. We’ve already decided to make our visit there a twice-yearly event.

We stayed here as the second destination of our honeymoon for 2 nights, and left wishing we'd made this our only destination. Our room was Bandits Bungalow, right on the bay, and it was simply amazing. Our stay was in early April, so it was a mixture of pouring rain and crystal clear sky, but cold the whole trip (which we loved).

Here's the layout of Bandits Bungalow just to be perfectly clear. It is 2 separate rooms that have an adjoining door and 2 separate entrances, so I think you can rent them each OR both. The back room has a bedroom with wetbar, a bathroom with a tub, a back patio facing the highway and trees, and a door that can be opened into the living room IF you rent it, or know the people staying there. The front room has a large livingroom with fireplace and wetbar, bathroom with tub, bedroom with view of the bay, and a deck hanging over the water. I think there's a TV in both... You'll NEVER turn on the TV in this place. I imagine all of the bungalows are on par with this room to some degree, so if we return, we don't mind which one we get. But Bandits Bungalow was a bit much for just the 2 of us. Note: 6 Oysters delivered to your door about 20 minutes after you get there (fresh or BBQ) as a welcome gift.

Complimentary breakfast is unreal. Fresh baked muffins, fresh squeezed OJ, bowl of fruit, and a french press full of tasty coffee. The menu is more extensive than that, but that's what we had waiting outside of our door at the time we specified the night before on our door tag.

We ate at Nick's (or room service) about 4 times while we were there, and were very impressed. Not sure about the older reviews of the restaurant that I've seen out there, but any place that can knock Dungenous Crab Mac & Cheese out of the park one day, then wow you with a Cowgirl Creamery Grilled Cheese Sandwich the next day is not too shabby in my book. Not to mention service with a smile... Especially at the bar.

Anyway, this is already a long review so I'll stop now. If there is any doubt about the price, please know that it is worth absolutely every penny if you want to have an experience to remember. Hands down one of my favorite places on earth.
