“hitting on all cylinders”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 June 2013

This place really impresses. (And it should, given the prices.)

The management gets the big things right, but what really distinguishes the Nick's Cove experience is that all the little things are right, too. It's far away from everything else to seem like a real escape, but still a reasonable distance for a one-nighter from anywhere in the SF Bay Area.

Service, amenities, locale, food - all terrific. Sharon at the front desk was a stand-out.

My sweetie and I spent one night here (in "Ruthie's") and before we checked out, we had booked our next visit (in "Big Rock").

The little cottages over the water are the only way to go.

Our cottage was straight out of a Pinterest dreamboard called "perfect cozy luxe hideaway". Deep leather sofa and armchair, oriental carpets, woodburning stove, and tremendously comfortable bed. Small but well-appointed kitchen/dining space. Terrific bathroom with radiant tile floor (extra points) but no tub. A lovely deck over the water completed the space.

Upon check-in we are asked if we'd like our complementary BBQ oysters delivered to our cottage or in the bar. Swoon. We had them delivered, along with a gorgeous Riesling from Pey-Marin. Perfect start. Then we went through the arduous decision-making process of deciding what breakfast items we would like to have delivered to us in the morning.

Dinner in the restaurant was very good - too much food for us (beware the truffle fries - a serving could feed 4 people) but all was tasty. Service was very good. Rainbow chard salad with duck was off-the-hook great, as were crabcakes.

We slept like stones with the sound of lapping waves.

In the morning, our breakfast tray was delivered with good coffee, great scones, and an epic Crab Benedict.

We are counting the days before we can return.

Room Tip: get a cottage on the water.

This is the fist place we had to say goodby to.
We stayed in Ruthie. The management does not miss one element of comfort without being pretentious. From the wonderful views from the cabin to the luxury bathroom condiments and bed linens!, there is not a detail missed.
The real beauty is that it such a great place to simply relax! And the accommodating staff is there to make your stay as delightful as possible.
This is a place for a romantic get away, a family outing where you actually spend time with the family or a great place for friends to have a great time. There are great beaches near by or wine tasting in nearby Sonoma or Russian River Valley.
This is now an annual visit.

Room Tip: All rooms are unique. We stayed in Ruthie and would do so again!

Great stop for lunch along Hwy 1. A little bit expensive for just a lunch on the road, but the food and service were both excellent. Would stop here again! The warm cauliflower salad was AMAZING! The Crab Benedict was good too.

First off, TripAdvisor needs to get its act together on this property listing. Some people come here only to eat, some to only sleep, and others to do both. Even though there is a separate listing for Nick's Cove Restaurant reviews, it is clear that some of the reviews on this cottages listing are for the restaurant only and the reviewers never spent the night here. The reviews of those who have spent the night in the cottages and those who only dined here should be separate to give fair overall ratings to both operations!

Nick's Cove on Tomales Bay was the first of 3 hotels in Marin County that I stayed at during a week of hiking the coastal range with a small group.

Nick's Cove has 12 cottages for overnight guests - 5 are over the water on stilts, and 7 are across CA1 and fully on land but do have a "water view".

I was in the Innkeeper's Cottage, which consists of the entire ground floor of a 2 story building on land across CA1. There are 2 more units above on the 2nd floor of this triplex building. I don't recall ever hearing either of my neighbors above even though the rooms were occupied both nights.

My 710 square foot room consisted of a large open rectangular space that was separated by furnishings into a king bedroom, a living/sitting area, and a full size kitchen. The large bathroom was a totally separate room with a door. Although the web site says it sleeps 4, I would not want to be in it with more than 2. All of the cottages are fully described in much detail, including square footages and photos, on Nick's web site so I won't waste the space to repeat all of that here.

The room was comfortable and I slept well here, but I did feel the cottage was a bit busy with all of the furnishings and accessories that were inside. I had 1 dinner here and the food and service was very good. Your room rate includes a nice continental breakfast delivered to your room, which I experienced both mornings. The included breakfasts were good, but the earliest delivery is between 8 and 8:30, resulting in, for me at least, quite a late start in the day.

It is clear from reading the reviews that many couples come here for romantic stays and special occasions, and mostly love the place. I can see why they would, but Nick's really didn't fit well into the type of trip I was on, in my opinion; although, this is not Nick's fault. My individual category ratings were a mixed bag of 3's, 4's and a 5, but they averaged to a total of 3.67, so I rounded up to a 4 (very good) overall out the 5 available ratings on the TripAdvisor scale.

We flew in on a sea plane and spent the night In two adjacent cottages with another couple and had a great dinner. The water lapping the shore at high tide at night almost directly under your window is special. Worth the trip!

We stayed at Nick's Cove for one night while driving down Highway One on a road trip to San Francisco on a friend's recommendation and we fell in love with it on first sight. The room was brilliant – although the fact that I insisted on lighting the wood-burning stove in May meant that it was so hot we could hardly breathe. Dinner was delicious and while I normally think cooking oysters is a waste of a good oyster the oyster Nick-o-fellers were sublime. And the barman made us some of the best Negronis we have ever had. We will definitely be back. I have subtracted one star, however, as the receptionist was incredibly crabby in the morning when we inquired where are breakfast had got to. They may well have been busy but that is not our problem and a polite inquiry does not warrant a frankly impolite response. This in no way spoilt our stay but it was unnecessary and foolish – especially from a mature woman who should know better.

Travelling from London, via San fran then up to Mendocino we were tipped off about this unique spot for a great stop off on the way back. Simply charming. We were hoping for a waterfront room but as we only booked the day before we 'settled' for Fly Fishermans, just back from the road. It was lovely, really luxurious, spacious and well equipped. Food in the restaurant was superb. Wine Wednesday was a welcome surprise too! We will be back. Keep up the good work.
