For those who like variety in their walks, you can't beat the one at Jughandle. You start going west towards the ocean, come back around under highway 1 and head inland. From there you have a beautiful walk through the redwoods and come out onto a dirt road. You will notice that you've gone from giant trees into trees that look like they have just started. On the dirt path you will come to some metal posts. Continue about 75 yards and on the right will be a pathway made of wood. You have arrived at the pygmy forest. I hope you enjoy this walk as much as I have through the years. I've witnessed sea lions corralling schools of fish and found mountain lion tracks.

This is a nice place to pull off and enjoy a walk out to the bluff area overlooking the ocean or walk the stairs down to the beach. As noted, the surf is strong here with plenty of warning signs up above. Still a good spot to get right down on the beach, what a nice place to spend a little time as you drive up or down the coast.

Jughandle is one of the few state run areas that doesn't yet require a parking or day use fee. Park, use the outhouse, then take off to your choice of a very nice, sandy beach, or under the highway and up the trail that traverses the ecological staircase and ends up at a pygmy forest. Five or six miles of not-too-strenuous walking for a wonderful round trip through the forest.

One of the best hikes in California...educational, varied, beautiful. A relatively easy hike on a well-maintained trail with small off trails that allow for a great picnic or resting spot. Pygmie forest worth of the whole hike. A must-do when in Mendocino

This was a great spot! Going from Ocean to Forest in a matter of a few steps! My fiancée and I were lucky enough to see the migrating whales along with the pygmy forest! We did get a little lost on the trail to see the Pygmy forest but we made it! The trail isn't to complicated and isn't steep. No real tricky parts. There was no fee to visit, portable facilities for use (no hand washing station & garbage is inside the portable potty). Your length of visit varies depending on how you hike & what you do.
