Owner description: A beautiful estuary in which to observe nature.

The river empties into the Mendocino waters, and is quite a wonderful contrast to the nearby coast. Here, time slows down, and the forest atmosphere prevails. Really a different, wonderful world. The views, light, and prevailing spirit are always enjoyable. We hope to kayak it soon.

The Big River, which meets the ocean just south of the village of Mendocino, is one of several favorite places to hike and explore when we visit the area. There's an old logging trail that follows the river for miles, bordered by beautiful redwood forest, great for hiking or mountain biking. Where the river meets the ocean, there is a beach area (depending on tides) where you can explore or just kick back and enjoy the scenery. And on the south side of the river there is a business that rents canoes, maybe kayaks too (not sure) that you can paddle up and down the Big River. Something to consider if you're thinking of canoeing up the river -- it is a tidal river, meaning the direction of flow changes with the tides. So if you paddle far up river and then want to paddle back when the tide is coming in, you're going to be paddling against the current plus usually the wind coming off the ocean. Something we learned the hard way years ago. But it's a beautiful place to canoe, or hike.

Great smooth wide kayaking river, but dont go too far up if you're in bad shape, as the wind on your face on the way back to the beach can be very difficult to fight against! Very quiet place, with lots of wildlife, including a curious seal or otter.

There is a wonderful old logging road that goes back (east) into the woods for miles - great for biking and jogging. There is a big wide beach where you can walk, play frisbee or just sit and watch the surfers.

Best thing about the big river is the big beach that comes with it just as it meets the Pacific Ocean. Great for dogs and just hanging out.
