I loved the walk around the headlands. The surf, the smells and the birds. Don't go there with little unleashed kids. The drops to the water would be fatal.

The Mendocino Headland park is a place where you could spend a little or a lot of time, and either way it would be very enjoyable!

The coast view was simply fantastic, and we liked very much walking along the coast in the grassland. We also climbed down on the rocks and just sat there watching the waves come and go and wash over the kelp forest again and again.

Highly recommend it.

The jewel of Mendocino Headlands State Park is the meandering Headlands Trail that hugs the coastal bluffs. Suggest picking up a connecting trail that starts near the corner of Main and Heeser Streets and head for the bluffs. The dirt trail winds through native and non-native, grasses, ice plant and wildflowers. Just a short walk in, there is a great photo op for a beautiful picture of Mendocino's Main Street historical buildings with the bluffs and Portuguese Beach in the foreground. Continue the trail past the old timber cross ties to the open Blow Hole to gaze and see the ocean waves rush in and out. Next up is an interesting locals carved totem pole, and then the absolutely gorgeous coastal views as the trail meanders next to the bluffs. Every 100 yards along brings a new and beautiful look of tide pools, rocky outcroppings, submerged and then exposed mini rock islands, coves, bays, etc. The natural beauty of the shoreline against the ocean backdrop is truly awe inspiring. The walk can be as short as you want, but is worthy of a good few miles of never ending and changing incredible views. In short take your time, and the time, to take in the ocean air, serenity, and natural beauty of trekking the Headlands Trail.

The most memorable slice of Mendocino coastline is not to be missed. You can view it from the road, or hike down.

We biked this area and saw the beautiful coast up close. We heard seals barking and waves breaking. It was terrific!
