My husband and I are from the Northeast and we recently spent 3 nights in the Amber room at the Agate Cove Inn. We drove over from Sonoma after spending a couple of days in the wineries. The check in area is a small alcove off the main room of the Inn which is really more like a B & B. The main room has a seating area surrounded by books and knick knacks and comfy sofas. The front of the main room is the kitchen and breakfast room overlooking the Mendocino Headlands. The landscaping and gardens around the Inn are lush and beautiful. I wish I could grow a Rosemary TREE in my garden! There is a spacious lawn area with chairs and a deck with sofas near the hot tub. All very inviting.

Breakfast is served daily and was a nice mix of pancakes, French toast and fruit with plenty of juice and coffee. And, our hosts also accommodated special requests as we noticed another guest enjoying a different meal. The only issue I had was the syrup on the table was pancake syrup and not real maple syrup. For what we were paying a night, real maple syrup should have been served.

There is also a small guest area that is open 24 hours and has a popcorn machine and tea, coffee and scones are there for the taking. There are also maps and restaurant brochures for guests to peruse as well.

Our room was in the building behind the main building but the porch and the bed overlooked the gardens, which were teeming with hummingbirds, and the headlands across the street. The rooms are very well appointed with a small fridge, wine glasses and champagne glasses, cheese board and some cutlery. Couldn't ask for more.

There are two rooms in this category, Amber and Jasper and I went back and forth between them. The décor in the Jasper room is more updated, king bed, tv is flat screen and the fireplace is in the wall. Amber is a little more dated, queen bed, tv is older and housed in a hutch and the fireplace is a gas woodstove in the corner. But Amber has a far superior view! I went with the view and was not sorry at all. Very comfortable space to read and relax. Especially since the weather was a bit gray and damp for the first part of our stay, but it didn't stop us. By midday on the last day, the sun came out and we spent a lovely afternoon sitting on the lawn, reading and sipping Iron Horse Brut X sparkling wine that we brought from Sonoma watching the sun set into the Pacific! Exactly what I had hoped for.
Roger and Larraine are very nice people and make all their guests feel welcome. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Go with the rooms with the superior view because even when the weather is a little gray and damp, yo...

My wife and I stayed in the Garnet bungalow (August 2013) for a few nights before heading on our way to Oregon. The bungalow/'cottage' was a duplex, as are most of them on the property. This was our first time staying here but we'll be back. We selected the Inn because we wanted to be ocean front - which it is. The property backs up to highway 1 but there's no need to worry about noise. The cottages are well insulated and after 10 pm highway has no traffic. Our cottage had 2 queen beds, a small table and chairs, a gas fireplace, big screen LCD TV, DVD player, free wi-fi, a bath tub/shower combo, and a small outside deck with chairs (with an ocean and garden view). The room was clean, neat, and had plenty of space. The beds were comfortable, however, they were creaky/squeaky so honeymooners beware! Breakfast was tasty and the view over the ocean through the large dining room windows was magnificent. The in is within walking distance on downtown Mendocino (about 1 mile / 15 min walk). There is a hot tub on the deck and it too has an ocean view. Many of the guests, us included, sat for hours enjoying the sound of the surf, being 'unplugged', reading a book, and drinking our wine. Then we'd stroll into town and eat, drink, shop, and look at the art galleries. There are plenty of good restaurants in town and since you're in the heart of wine country, there's also plenty of good wine.

Room Tip: Review the room photos before you select your cottage.

We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Agate Cove Inn. The Garnet is one of two duplex buildings that we have on our property and you are right it is quiet and well insulated. We have made every effort to include amenities in each room that we would like ourselves. Thank you for listing them in your review. Thank you also for alerting us to the one squeaky bed. We got right on that! Looking forward to your next stay with us.

PROS: Location, location, location. What lovely views of the ocean, with great sitting areas to view it. Breakfasts were delicious & substantial. The gardens were simply beautiful. Enjoyed that it was just outside town (less noise), yet an easy 15-20 minute walk to downtown (enjoyed that extra wine at dinner without having to drive). The innkeepers suggestions for dinner were spot on and they were helpful with activity suggestions. We stayed in the Sun-stone room - spacious and the views were stunning. Nava (the dog) is certainly a bonus feature.
CONS: At this price point I do expect a little more. A shampoo & conditioner dispenser mounted on the wall - tacky 2-3 star hotel feature. The quality of the toiletries were very basic - nothing luxurious. Noisy plumbing and hard to get a good temperature mix in the shower/bath. Holes in wall where curtain rods had been moved (it really doesn't take that much to fill and paint them). Stained carpet - it may be clean but stains are unappealing - go with darker carpet next time. Cracked sink. These are mostly small maintenance issues, but I do expect better.

Thank you for reviewing us! I can tell your our dog Nava really, really misses playing with you. Thank you for your kindness towards her. Yes the views, gardens, location and breakfast are wonderful here. We are glad you had a good experience. Thank you for pointing out those maintenance issues. We have been sold out all summer so it has been challenging to get some of these details attended to between guests departing and arriving. We are very conscious of the details and strive for perfection. The shampoo and conditioner dispensers were required in order to comply with Trip Advisor and AAA ratings of being "Green". We do fill the dispensers with quality products and are pleased to have eliminated the extra small plastic bottles. Just trying to do our part.

This is by far one or the best places we have ever stayed. We stayed here 8 years ago and ever since have been longing to go back. Well, we did this past August and we were not disappointed. It was even more beautiful than we recalled. The cottages are made for relaxing. All the small touches...sherry in the room, robes, the most comfortable pillows to rest your head. The gardens are charming and so well tended. The view is breathtaking. A wonderful breakfast in a delightful dining room greets you in the morning. The innkeepers could not be more warm and helpful. We are already thinking about when we can plan our next stay at the Agate Cove Inn!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Amber Cottage and loved the view from our deck.

Wow! 5 stars in all categories!!! We are so thrilled that you loved our inn just as much as you did when you stayed here 8 years ago. It is fun for us to have repeat guests who remember the inn from past trips. We never tire of witnessing the WOW when they return and see the new 40 foot wall of glass facing the ocean in the breakfast room. We have been working at upgrading the cottages and the common areas since purchasing the inn in 2005. Thank you for your kind words and wonderful review.

A wonderful place to stay with beautiful views of the ocean and lovely, private Agate Cove. The breakfasts are scrumptious, and cranberry-walnut biscotti to die for. Roger and Lorraine think of EVERYTHING to make your stay marvelous. Wonderful rooms, terrific appointments, spacioua bathrooms - everything you could want. Can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Rooms with view are more expensive, but save your money, since sitting on the deck or front lawn is...

This is a lovely Inn just outside Mendocino . The gardens are beautiful and the rooms very nicely decorated and comfortable. There is a gas fire in the room for cold evenings.
When we arrived it was a very hot day and the room was very hot. There was a ceiling fan over the sitting area of the room which cooled that area of the room. The pilot light for the fire could not be switched off so the bed area of the room was uncomfortable hot which made it hard to sleep.
Breakfasts were nice but there was a lack of variety. Great coffee in lovely pottery mugs.
The views are lovely and the town itself has nice walks to the cliffs and beaches and there are nice shops and galleries to browse.
The fog rolls in and out from the sea creating incredible views and atmospheres all day long.

Thank you for reviewing us. You were memorable to me because you are Irish and I am from Scotland! It is always great to be reviewed from seasoned travelers and according to your review record, you are just that. We are glad that the gardens and the room met your expectations and that you loved our location. When you arrived on Aug. 15th, it was the warmest day we have had all year. The temperature actually reached 73 degrees! (a heat wave for us). So glad you enjoyed our coffee and the wonderful mugs. We offer a rotating menu but are happy to prepare anything you like, just tell us what you need and we will take special care to please you.

Roger and Laraine are the innkeepers of this lovely, romantic and quiet inn on the Mendocino Coast. We got married there on the lawn overlooking the Pacific, then stayed for two nights. The views are breathtaking, the breakfast is wonderful and the innkeepers are warm, friendly and do everything possible to make your stay memorable. We highly recommend this romantic inn, whether you are newlyweds, celebrating a special ocassion or just need a break from it all! The accomodations are warm and cozy, the grounds are gorgeous, you won't find a better view on the coast, and there are so many wonderful restaurants nearby for dinner as well as shopping, hiking, biking or just relaxing, whatever your heart desires! Thanks for everything Roger and Laraine!
