agate cove inn is such a special place. we didnt have reservations and called on our way driving down the coast. they stayed up and waited for us to arrive. our room was recently renovated and was more then i expected! its one of the few that is attached to the main house but has its own seperate entrance. so private and cute! there's even a private garden seating area where one can enjoy a nice glass of wine. the inn's grounds are beatitful! all the flowers and plants give this a magical fairy garden place. especially after arriving here from a foggy drive down the coast...it was truly special. the next morning we woke up to clear skies and the beautiful mendocino coast. breakfast was waiting for us in the warm cozy kitchen with spectacular views! after breakfast we had to head out, but we definitly will be back and for a longer stay next time!
the inn is one of the few that i noticed that was set right along the coast, there are no other structures in between to block the view. great location!

My fiance and i stayed at the Agate Cove Bed and Breakfast on August 26-27th of 2009. Between the beautiful manicured landscapes, to the elegant decor of the room and dinning area you will truly feel at ease in a very comfortable atmosphere. The owners are are very helpful, and are full of wonderful recommendations, that we did all of them they suggested. We stayed in the Moonstone cottage, and could not have been more pleased. Better yet, the breakfast was divine. They had very appropriate mood music playing to what was one of the most delicious breakfasts i have enjoyed. You simply can not pass up Agate Cover bed and breakfast. My fiance and I would recommend this place as "Flawless". We look forward to many more visits.

We stayed at this fantastic B & B -- even though we basically do not enjoy B & Bs. But, these individual cottages with private deck and your own fireplace (which was necessary even in July!) were wonderful. Very comfortable kingsize bed with lots of fluffy pillows. GREAT breakfast. Wonderful ocean views. And, the gardens were lush and in full bloom. I highly recommend and would return again for sure!

I have stayed in a few places in Mendocino, and Agate Cove has the most picturesque view of the Pacific-- the roaring waves in the cave, the fishing boats, the pink evening sky- fantastic.

The room was very comfortable, the bed fantastic, the fireplace romantic, the breakfast delicious, the hosts kind and knowledgeable.

A few things that would be good to know: It's surprisingly cold outside in Mendocino even in August (warm and cozy in the inn though); The bathroom offered a tub with an extendable shower nozzle (but no shower).

I would definitely plan on staying here again.

We've just been reminiscing about our 3 week vacation in Northern California which was wonderful - including wandering around San Francisco, hiking in Yosemite and Lassen National Park, rafting in the Upper Klamath, watching whales and Osprey along the coast - and the last 2 days we spent at the Agate Cove Inn provided a brilliant and very memorable finale for this trip. The accomodation, views and the hospitality (and of course the breakfasts) were excellent and there couldn't have been a better way to end our vacation in this beautiful part of the world.

Agate Cove is a pleasant property in many ways. The biggest downside for us was the strong perfume smell in the room, which came from various sources -- scented fabric softener on the sheets and blankets, evidently "room freshener"-type sprays, and a potpourri. We opened all the doors and windows but it didn’t help much.

I merely dislike perfume smells, but my wife has a chemical sensitivity and gets migraines and allergic reactions from them. As a result, we carry our own unscented sheets when we travel, so we replaced the Agate Cove sheets with ours, which helped somewhat, but not completely. We haven't had to do this for several years and we've stayed in over a dozen different places during that time, so I think this place ranks pretty high on the smell scale.

We also requested no maid service for our second day, but this never filtered down to housekeeping, so when we returned to the room, it had been re-sprayed and we had to open all the doors and windows again to try to air it out again.

No doubt some people like these smells, and others could care less, but if you dislike or are allergic to them, this is probably not the place for you.

A couple of other problems: many rooms are within a hundred feet or so of four-lane Highway 1, so traffic noise is noticeable, though the duplex cottages have good sound isolation between the rooms. We requested champagne delivered on our second day, but instead it was there when we first arrived.

On the positive side, the location is nice, though hardly ocean-front, and is often cool and foggy, as is typical for the area. The rooms are large and well-appointed, though the decor is a tad Readers-Digest-y. The grounds are well-kept with a beautiful flower garden, and the breakfast was excellent, among the best we’ve ever had.

This was our second stay, after an excellent stay five years ago. Ownership has changed since then, and we were a little concerned that standards might have changed too.

No need to worry at all. Roger and Laraine run the place as well as ever (they have been owners for four years), breakfasts are a gourmet treat, the cottages are warm and comfortable, and the views are as romantic as ever.

The pre-arrival and on-site service are second to none - owner Laraine arranged massages and made local recommendations that were spot on (try la Petite Rive!!!). Everything was done perfectly and punctually.

Rooms are very clean (ours was cleaned while we ate breakfast!).

Having read some of the other comments, noise from the highway was not noticeable at all, and charges to the credit cards were spot on. We stayed in Obsidian - recommended.
