“Perfect place to stay in Mendocino on California Coast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2011

The Blackberry Inn is located on the east side of Highway 1 across from City of Mendocino. It is less than 5 minutes to the heart of town but very quiet and relaxed. No road noise, no noisy neighbors. Rooms are built on a ridge looking west. Easy parking in front of room.

Rooms are almost like small cottages with exquisite decorations reflecting an old west Village theme. Beds are comfortable; staff is very friendly. Best coffee in room I've ever had; plus fruit and homemade muffins. Each room has microwave, small refer, & wireless internet. Some rooms have ocean view though it is somewhat distant. Prices for a Mendocino motel are reasonable.

Room Tip: All the rooms are about equal.

This is a motel, not a B&B, so keep your expectations in check. We knew this and chose it because we're not into the whole B&B experience, so it worked well for us. The location is on a small hill across the highway from Mendocino and it is very quiet. The website for this place does exaggerate their "gardens". The landscaping is nice, but it is just a strip between the rooms and your car, not what I would call "grounds". Nothing wrong with it, but nothing to get excited over either.

The western theme of the front of the rooms is well done and very cute. The interiors are country-western style and OK for what it is. The decor could use an update, but the beds were comfortable and our two days there were pleasant. A snack/breakfast basket is provided each day that was nice and sufficient to get us out the door without looking for breakfast first. There were three whole fruits, two mini loaves of homemade banana bread, two homemade cookies, hot chocolate packets, and some microwave popcorn.

There was a refrigerator and a microwave in the room. There is no air conditioning, but there is a clever opening in the wall that can be opened for ventilation without leaving the windows open. The bathroom was dated with a very low shower head (it hit me between the shoulders), but everything worked.

The room was very clean, but the carpet could probably use a cleaning soon and there was water damage along the front wall of the room (Barber Shop). It was quiet as long as other guests behaved properly, which they didn't in our case. There is a big lawn behind the rooms and a partial ocean view. Guests are requested not to run around in this area because it can disturb others guests, but some people don't read the rules.

We only saw staff at check-in/out and they were OK, but not overly outgoing or helpful. They tried to answer questions about the local area, but they aren't very informed about the area. There is plenty of free parking right outside your room. Free wireless internet is provided and it was very fast.

If you're not into B&B's this is about your only choice in Mendocino that doesn't cost a fortune. I do think it is overpriced for what it is, but it is not out of step with the area. You can get better deals and more modern accommodations a few miles north in Fort Bragg and I'd probably go there next time. I would stay here again if I had to stay in Mendocino, but I wouldn't make a huge effort to do so.

Clean and we got a grate rate. The basket of snacks was really nice. Not my style but a very comfortable bed. We stayed in the saloon room. Although, if i were to do it again, I would have stayed in the village of Mendocino. Its very close, but as a stop along our road trip if would have been nice to not get into the car every time we wanted to eat or go to the ocean.

We had a wedding so our side of the family stayed here--had 8 rooms. Rooms were clean, area was quiet, breakfast baskets were nice! Rooms had fridge and microwave so easy to fix more to eat. You did have to drive to get into Mendicino but it wasn't a hassle. One room did have water leak in the last night--but we were given another room to use till we checked out. In all, pleasant place to stay.

You could see the ocean from several vantage points which was nice. One drawback--cell phone coverage was poor. That is fine if you are "getting away" and hard if you are coordinating a wedding!

A fellow TA member directed me to this inn. I am so very glad they did. We loved it here and wished we could have spent more than two nights.

Arrival and check in. We arrived late and got good directions from the office person. It was midweek. Check in was quick and efficient, not overly friendly, but did hand us out several informational pamphlets on the area. They were not very busy on this night, but again, it was midweek.

We were able to park right in front of our room. We had the "Schoolhouse" room. There is a white plastic chair right outside the door, but not two, as there should be. We loved the room. There is a cathedral ceiling in this room, as well as the bathroom. A very large picture window that overlooks an interior garden, with beautiful flowers, especially the rosebushes. In addition to this window, there are two other large windows that let in a lot of light, as well as one small window. There is also a very large window in the bathroom. All have blinds or curtains (tab curtains) you can pull anytime you want. This large window opens up for good air circulation.

The bed. King sized brass bed. Extremely comfortable. Very nice linens, and bedding covers. One blanket and a very warm and cozy comforter. Three pillows and two extra large pillow shams. Slept like a baby, and I am a very light sleeper! Two nightstands, with lamps, and a clock radio. Each nightstand has a drawer. The bed is located in a bit of a nook area of the large, expansive room.

Writing desk. Very cute. Lots of little cubbyholes, if I remember correctly. It folds open. There are two folding chairs located in the chiffarobe/closet and I used one of these chairs at the desk. You will find a pad of paper, pen and laundry bag (plastic) in this desk. There are three drawers in the desk, also. Coffee maker on top, with plenty of coffee, creamer, sugar, hot chocolate, tea bags, stirring sticks. Extra plugs behind desk, if needed. Lamp on top.

TV cabinet. Older TV on top. Opens for more storage, VCR/DVD player. Lamp here as well. Your breakfast basket will be located here. Ours contained and was replished with: 2 apples, oranges and bananas, small bunch of grapes, 2 homemade cookies, packet of popcorn, 2 small banana bread loaves, hot chocolate packets. All was fresh and good!

Two, blue glider rocking chairs with matching ottomans. A blanket laid over one of them. Small table between chairs, that expands with the leaf out. Very comfortable! I could have spent all day just rocking, reading, relaxing and lookin out at the garden. :)

Lighting is good, but I do wish they had a rocking chairside lamp. There is a light hanging from the ceiling, but I didn't feel it was enough to read by once it got dark.

Closet. There is no closet, but a large, wooden chiffarobe, that has sevreal hangars in it, along with one luggage rack, iron/board and the two previously mentioned folding chairs.
Just watch your head if you lean into the chiffarobe, you might bang your head pulling it out of the thing..lol. I did this twice....

There is a nice size frig and a microwave in the corner by the door.

The bathroom is large and has lots of storage space. There is one sink, but with a wall to wall counter/cabinet. There are three cabinets to place your things in underneath. There is also a 5 drawer chest located in the bathroom, with extra towels inside one of the drawers. Good lighting. Hair dryer. Nice tub and shower with good pressure. Towels are decent and the bath products are also very nice.

The grounds are beautiful. Flowers everywhere. They are well kept. A gardener comes in I think once a week from the Mendocino Botanical Gardens. We saw him about, but he never bothered us, like one previous reviewer stated. There are several seating areas spread around the place-wooden swings, gliders, chairs. I also think there was a firepit.

There is also a path I believe you can take a walk on....somewhere. Good outdoor lighting.

Check-out was quick and efficient and friendlier than check-in. There are several sample menus in the office for surrounding restaurants, and all those pamphlets mentioned earlier. Prices are fair for the area and for what you get. It is a cute themed inn and after taking a peak in the windows of several of the rooms, I don't think there is a bad one to be had. Many have outside decks or patios. Excellent housekeeping.

I very highly recommend this inn; it is a good alternative to some of the more expensive B&B's in the area and is only about a 2 minute drive from Mendocino village itself. Great place for some R&R. Unfortunately for us, it is 3000 miles away....lol.

I would come back in a heartbeat.

On the spur of the moment, we decided that we needed to get away. We did a search of B & B's in the Mendocino area and looked at the reviews they received. The Blackberry Inn was the only one we found that had no negative review and now we know why.

We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, the room was great..clean, comfortable, and exactly as it was pictured online.
