Stayed here for 2 nights in late August 2011 - booked and stayed in Storybook cottage. Quite expensive, 300 USD per night, but all properties in Mendocino are quite expensive. Two bedroom house at the end of dirt road in the middle of the forest some 1.5 miles from Blackberry Inn office. So, you have your own cottage and your own peace of mind. Arrived at 2pm, as owner send me e-mail saying that early check-in will be possible (usually check in is at 3pm) - despite e-mail had some problems, as office lady was not aware of the e-mail. Property is cottage, with 2 bathrooms, 2 bedrooms, lovely equipped kitchen and living room with real fireplace and cosy day-bed. You also get welcome fruit basket with cookies, a nice gesture. All was in working order, but we wish that housekeeping would devote more attention to cleaning duties, as spider webs were visible all over the place... and place has some odour, and we had to open several windows right away. Other than that, there is no internet and no mobile coverage, which is rather nice for a change...

The Blackberry Inn is a very charming place to stay and considering what it costs to stay in Mendocino, is extremely reasonably priced. The ocean view was nice as was the fireplace. The room itself was quite comfortable although some of the decor and amenities a bit dated. However, the breakfast breads and brownies were a very welcome treat.

Perhaps the owners have read the reviews and changed a bit as we found the staff to be quite friendly and helpful. While I would recommend the Blackberry Inn, I would suggest that if you are looking for lower rates, as others have mentioned, head north to Fort Bragg.
Actually, given the quality of the Inn, the rates are not bad even for a area less expensive than Mendocino.

The other good thing was the free wireless Internet connection which worked well, although I couldn't get a cell phone signal at the hotel.

One tip for the Mendocino area, be careful if you are like us and pay for just about everything on a credit card. We were quite surprised at how many of the restaurants in the area are "cash only." It will behoove you to check to be sure your desired eatery takes a credit card, otherwise you better stop at the ATM first.

Room Tip: Very nice place to stay

This Inn, located a little north of Mendocino town is, in fact, a B&B because they provide a mini continental-style breakfast ,to be eaten in your room, comprising a selection of fruit and baked mini-sweetloaves. The rooms have a 'fridge, microwave, and coffee-maker for those who wish to have a more varied breakfast.
Originally a motel, the Inn is very private, located a short distance back from Highway 1, on a hill, and was converted/remodeled about 20 years ago to resemble a gold-rush village, with each room given a name and exterior facade to match the name. Thus, we stayed in " Assayer".
Our room was fairly large, with a fireplace, and exceptionally clean and comfortably furnished, without any ostentation, such as the myriad useless pillows that seem to be the fashion these days. It had modern double-glazed windows facing the ocean , which could be seen, barely, through the neighbors' trees which were originally very low but over the years have grown to obscure the once-pristine view.
Our only grumble with the room was the surprising lack of a bathroom extractor fan, with one result that condensation on the bathroom window had rotted the window sill. A very strange omission.
Internet worked well in the room.
Staff were very friendly and helpful and Cathy, at the front desk, gave us really helpful info on restaurants and activities in the area.
We were very pleased with our stay and will return!

Room Tip: All rooms face the ocean/hillside trees. "Assayer" is excellent value.

just want to add that I lived in Mendocino for years so I know every inn and guesthouse and believe me, there's no other place anywhere like this one. It begins the instant you turn into the drive and are at once transported to a magical little, storybook of a western street, complete with post office and even the local lock-up. The Stadd couldn't be nicer and the rooms more adorable... and they charge less for all this than other places that don't offer more than your everyday Holiday Inn.
They say the best recommendations come from the natives so I tell everyone I know and they always call to thank me... and while I've moved away, when I go back I know where I stay!

We stayed in the "school house" at the Blackberry, thematically decorated, clean, and located next to a very friendly Mendocino resident who offered us a Meyer lemon from his tree. Right down the road, we drove to watch the sunset and spied whales swimming up the coast--truly idyllic. The only downside to the Blackberry is that the front desk is pretty indifferent. Having just come from a motel where the desk was very friendly, offering suggestions and just conversation, asking questions at the Blackberry elicited vague, blase responses tantamount to "I don't know." Didn't ruin the stay, but a friendly and helpful desk would have easily elevated it to an "excellent" rating.

This is was very homey and comfortable. The ocean view was beautiful and one morning we had deer across the grass outside our window. Very peaceful location off the busy highway and many trees around. Every day they left a goodie basket with local coffee, hot chocolate, microwave popcorn, homemade mini-loaves, bannana nut and lemon, baked cookies or brownies and a bag of dog biscuits and clean up bags for the 4 pawed traveler. Room had a refrigerator also. Each room is like a cottage. Each one is a different western town theme but it is not cheesy. Some are larger to accomodate more people or smaller for a single or couple. A fruit basket and coffee was also in the lobby for the guests. We liked the coffee so much we bought some in town to take home. Great place and worth the price.
