“The Restless Sea”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

What is there to say except that Mendocino has the most beautiful waves and although there is some beach access, I don't associate it with a place Id walk on the beach at. Instead Mendocino, to me is a place where you watch the restless sea from above and bask in its natural beauty. So much of this area hasn't been ruined by modern things like big box stores or ugly condominiums. Its nice to have an area that is historic, gorgeous and untouched. Thats why I like it here, beauty from above and afar. Nature that is untouched and left to do what it does best, thrive. I loved it

“Beautiful Coastal Drive”
Reviewed 11 August 2014

We enjoy going to Mendocino and depending upon what we are doing either stay in Mendocino and like in particular the Little River area for that

or in Fort Bragg area (i.e. generally Fort Bragg if want to take the Skunk Train).

We like the state parks in the area and stop at them during our drive. Some of our favorites include:

1) Watching the abalone divers at Van Damme State Park

2) Exploring the tidal areas at MacKerricher State Park

3) Enjoying Russian Gulch State Park

The drive is beautiful either south to north (or north to south). One note - once away from the coastal drive and going inland the routes get slower in terms of driving so just plan for that.

Along the area there is lots of opportunities for activities such as shopping at the charming shops at Mendocino, dining at good restaurants, beach walking and hikes, bike riding, exploring the harbors and perhaps going fishing, and more.

“Great views!”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

A beautiful trip up CA Hwy1. The views are fantastic and a trip into Mendocino itself is a must. The town has many historic buildings and is the set for 'Cabot Cove' the fictional town for the TV series 'Murder She Wrote'. It is also a shopping paradise!
August may not be the best time to travel the coast though. Sea mists roll in, the wind blows and it can be quite chilly so warm jumpers are a must.
A trip to Point Arena Lighthouse is worth a short detour off the highway. It has a small museum and a tour of the lighthouse itself is included in the entry fee. This is also one of the settings for a scene in 'Forever Young' starring Mel Gibson . In fact many films and TV series have been set along the Mendocino Coast line.
