I'm really surprised at the high ratings for this hotel. Yes, it's charming, yes, it's quaint, and yes, it's in the middle of town, but I expect better from a property with such high ratings. We arrived on a Sunday with reservations for 3 nights. Even though the vacancy sign was out, we received a room at the very back of the hotel, right over the kitchen, which was loud from about 8 am to 11 pm. Small window looked out the back at the water tower. The towels were horrible (they'd be rags at my house). The bed was worn, soft and saggy in the center. The wifi was terrible.

I also felt like the hotel placed much of its emphasis on the restaurant and bar. I didn't feel comfortable just sitting in the lobby/lounge to enjoy the fireplace or the windows without feeling pressure to order a drink or something. There were a few places to sit, but they were dark and cramped. Most of the nicer locations in the lobby seemed reserved for people who came in for a drink or food.

Stayed one night on a motorcycle trip. Very comfortable and well run hotel. The lobby and dining area are spacious and lots of comfortable furniture. Wi-Fi in the lobby which works fine. The walls are a bit thin which is difficult to avoid in an older building of this type. The room I had had no shower but did have an attractive hand basin and a very comfortable bed with a duvet and nice pillows. Tempted to stay another night

The building is historic and it certainly has the look of an old saloon from the outside. Once inside, the decor is very dark with dark red/brown wallpaper and dark wood panelling. Each room is unique with different colour schemes. Ours was in the back of the hotel with a private bath, closet and fairly good size bed, but no TV. The hotel has a restaurant and you may also sit in the lobby and have something to eat from the bar menu. Very good food and overall friendly staff. Wi-Fi available, but not in the rooms as the hotel has tin ceilings that blocks the signals. It works well in the lobby though. Overall, the hotel could do with some refurbishment as the paint has peeled here and there and the wallpaper is worn in some places. Also, be warned that the walls are very thin and you might hear more than you want from other guests in neighbouring rooms. Parking available in front of the hotel at no extra charge. The hotel has a great view of the bay, but don't go in the summer as the fog will cover up everything.

Room Tip: In the front for a view, in the back for a bigger room with your own bath

The staff are very friendly and the accommodations are good. The building is from the 1800's and a definite charmer. Loved the lobby and bar area. Nice place to relax and visit over a wine and cheese or a few beers. Definitely a family place as well. Mendocino itself is a lovely community of calm and friendly people - matches the environment. The weather, though, is on the chilly side given that the fog is in most of the time. Can't beat the beauty of the coast, though.

We didn;t book ahead so I felt we were gouged at the price of the room, the room despite overlooking the Ocean was not worthy of almost $200, the towels were antique pieces along with the many pieces adorning the walls. And as for the person at reception (the evening shift), all I can say is she should not be managing customers, to counter the people during the morning shift were very pleasant. If you get a decent rate on the room it is worth a stay.

This is a wonderful, charming, old-European style hotel, right on the waterfront in Mendocino, and within steps of restaurants, galleries, a bookstore and shopping. The grand staircase takes you up to the balcony level and rooms, many of which have shared bathrooms. Old and/or antique furniture contributes to the warm ambiance, and Persian carpets capture the era of sea captains and widows walks...There's a fireplace and comfortable chairs to relax in, and a variety of dining areas. Our Room 24 opened to the balcony and had a private bath with claw-foot tub, in which hot water and bubble bath added up to a pleasant evening after a chilly, windblown walk along the cliffside. For a special occasion (it is a little pricey) this is a wonderful place!

Room Tip: Many rooms have shared baths, but NOT Room 24, which is at the front and opens directly to the balco...

The Mendocino Hotel offers a wonderful low rate for students taking a class at the Mendocino Art Center. For the price $59 a night, it was excellent! The staff were very nice and helpful. Everything was clean and working. Mendocino is very quiet, so there was no problem with noise.
I felt very safe. The Mendocino Art Center is terrific too, so this is a perfect combo when you want to get away for a few days!

Room Tip: The special price was for one person. I believe it was an additional $10 a night for a second perso...
