What a luxury it was to go to the Maccallum House restaurant for Thanksgiving dinner this year. The food was great, especially the mushroom soup - just divine! A leisurely dinner with no dishes to clean! What could be better?

After researching places serving Thanksgiving dinner in the Mendocino area, we settled on the MacCallum House. They had three servings and we took the 5pm.

The house itself is charming, and in a beautiful location in the middle of tiny Mendocino.

The food and service were average. For the price, we ended up with a thoroughly okay, but certainly overpriced, Thanksgiving meal. Nothing really stood out, and yet there was no fault in any of the dishes, either. The turkey was...turkey. The portions were reasonably sized. The stuffing, which they called "savory bread pudding," made me long for mama's Stove Top. The ginger-on-ginger ice cream sandwiches were a nice end to the meal, although throwing dulce de leche or even standard vanilla between the ginger cookies would have mixed it up a bit.

The server was very sweet but was likely employed because they were short-staffed on the holiday. There were a lot of questions such as, "would you like more water," despite only having finished the appetizers.

No complaints about the experience we had, but I also won't head back to the MacCallum House when in Mendocino. It's just fine, but well overpriced.

This was an almost perfect end to our stay in Mendocino. The bar was hopping with fun drinks and good wine selection. The staff was attentive and answered all of our questions. Our seafood meal was delicious. The only down side was that two families came in with babies and small children who were tired, interrupting the cozy atmosphere with some shrill screams and crying.

We had a superb brunch this morning on the warm and cozy sun porch. We both ordered breakfast cocktails - me the Alexander (champagne & cassis) and my husband a Bloody Mary. The Bloody Mary was a bit different (interesting combination of citrusy, sweet and spicy) but really good! I ordered the omelette (spinach, mushrooms, & white cheddar) served with their home fries and a side of their applewood smoked bacon. Hubby had the Red Plate Special (fried eggs, potatoes, and home made sausage patty). We both opted for the whole wheat hazelnut toast which was served with a side of house-made apple butter. While ALL of the food was fresh and really tasty, the bacon was especially to die for. The service was excellent as well. We'd definitely recommend the brunch and would go back to try dinner next time we're in town.

Having made a reservation for 6 PM on a weeknight, we showed up on time. Two young ladies at the door to receive us. They discussed whether we would like to sit on the 'restaurant' side or the 'cafe' side where the bar is located. Having been alerted by our inn keeper that service can be slow on the restaurant side, we chose the latter. We were shown to a table. No other customers were there except for a lady having dinner at the bar and talking animatedly with the bar tender. A shop keeper in Mendocino had also warned us that service could be both slow and impersonal. While we were sitting on the cafe side, our only contact with the staff was a young lady who filled our water glasses. She mumbled something after I said 'thank you', then walked off. All this time, were sitting within view of the bar tender who continued to chat with the lady having dinner. No one gave us menus to look over, and no one offered to take our drink order. So after 10 minutes of what we perceived as the 'cold shoulder', we walked out. The ladies at the front door had disappeared and someone who might have been our waitress followed us out. No questions were asked; nothing was said. Based on our experience, the staff the evening we were there (Thursday 21 November) simply did not care. This restaurant is in a lovely old home, nicely fixed up, but poorly managed.
