“An anniversary weekend”
Reviewed 12 September 2013

If you're looking for anything other than a unique inn experience, go somewhere else. There's no in-room coffee, TV, room service or Junior Suite. It's a remodeled 6-bedroom inn with theme decor. It's not on the water and you really can't see the ocean from the rooms, so get outside. It's an easy two block walk to all the stores and neat coffee shops. However, two really good restaurants are actually next to the Nicholson House Inn, Cafe Beaujolais and the 955 Ukiah Street Restaurant. Breakfast was a nice surprise. Not only do you eat at one big table so that you can meet your other travelers, but the food was European and American--sliced meats, cheeses, muffins, hard boiled eggs, bagels, fruit, yogurts, cereals, and the best homemade scones ever.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms #3 or #4. They're on the second floor and face the street--all good except on Frid...

A very attractive B&B, this is a house converted to bedroom accommodation. Our booking was replied to with a lot of information about the house, the room etc, very much individual attention. The room was fairly small but well appointed. There was no T.V. in the room but there was a guest lounge, however it only had seating for about 4 people, there were at least 8 the night we stayed there. Not too much a problem for one overnight stay but it would be more limiting for a longer stay.
The breakfast was a very high quality European style continental breakfast with a huge variety of breads, meat, chees, preserves, cereal and as much fresh fruit as a small market.. All guests breakfast at a communal table which made for a very friendly breakfast experience. Our first experience of a US B&B. Very pleasant for an overnight but I would not choose it for a longer stay

We spent one night at Mendocino on the way to a weekend wedding. The home was built in 1905 and is historic. It is set back from the coast by a couple of blocks and right in the town but further away from the point than other guest houses. We chose the Orca room for what we thought would be a good view. Our view straight out of the single window was of other homes. If you looked at a 45 degree angle, you could see a sliver of the ocean.

There was a small kitchen downstairs. Food was pretty high cost in the town so we elected to buy a nice Chinese dinner prepared at the local market which had a good selection of wines/beers etc as well as pharmacy items. Do yourself a favor and go there first to see their delicatessen items...already prepared sweet & sour chicken, broccoli salad, an olive bar and lots more. We brought back enough for two plates which we heated in the microwave in the community kitchen at the guest house.

The room was pretty small, probably 11 X 13 plus a full bath that was added on. It was supplied nicely with soaps etc. I felt there was too much furniture in the tiny room to get around in. The only thing that got me really upset about the house was that since we are early risers, coffee is very important. There was no coffeemaker, not even in the kitchenette downstairs, nor coffee or condiments. Breakfast which was very nice was served at 8:30 but we were out and about at sunrise.

We had our early morning coffee at the marvelous Mendocino Hotel which has a wonderful view of the ocean. Wish we would have stayed there but the price of the Nicholson house made the difference. The prices of food at the hotel were not very different than the other places we looked at. We ate one meal --turkey sandwich 13.00 and fish & chips $15 at Patterson's Pub. For almost the same price we could have got a full meal at the Hotel.

The town itself is fascinatingly beautiful with lots of trails down to the beach. It sits high up on a cliff and is peaceful and very Victorian.

The breakfast at the Nicholson house was nice and served at a long dining table with china and tablecloth. There was a nice fruit assortment including blueberries, pineapple and strawberries, biscuits, bagels, juice, coffee, cereal, yogurt.

Room Tip: There are only a couple of rooms with an ocean view...ask first. Check out the market located a blo...

We arrived here at 7:30 PM after driving up CA coastal route 1. The property is located in the middle of town, there is no off street parking. The Orca Room was small and the only view of the water from this room is from the bathroom. The room is very small. The shower head in the bathroom was very low, hit me in the chest and I am only 5'10" tall. There was no mechanical ventilation, don't need AC there but a fan would have been nice to cool the room down. The B&B is with in walking distance to all 5 restruants in town. The breakfast time was very short window, but the selection wwas good.

The warm welcome is a good metaphor for the warmth of this place. Very cosy room, with a British countryside touch. Nice, huge bed. Excellent, fast wifi. Home-made scones at breakfast were delicious. An abundance of fresh fruits as well.

When you have nine pillows on the bed you know you are in the right place. The room was completely comfortable, everything worked and the cleanliness was superior. Breakfast couldn't have been more varied and homemade scones win the blue ribbon. WiFi was excellent. Heating worked very well. Bed was like being at home. Hot water in the shower almost instant. Quiet surroundings. Helpful and friendly welcome when we arrived. Will return asap.

Room Tip: We got room #6. It fit the bill for me.
