“Stay out of the raku house”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 July 2013 via mobile

We booked the "2 bedroom suite" in the raku house and couldn't have been more disappointed. Most significantly, the west room has no dresser or shelves. Literally. We asked and were told that there was a stand in the closet to make it easier to live out of our suit case. I subsequently talked to the owners who told me no one had ever mentioned it before. He then said he'd think about the problem for the future but the room was really too small for a dresser. Well, I think that would have been worth mentioning when I booked.
The rooms are billed as simple but they're actually barren and very worn. The full bath for the fireplace room is in the living room, another design flaw that wasn't mentioned.
The continental breakfast is a lovely idea and when we checked in we were asked how we liked our coffee; sadly, what we asked for wasn't supplied. It was readily available at the main house but that doesn't exactly count as breakfast delivered to your door. The owners had a vague interest in how things had gone wrong but didn't seem to actually think they needed to address it in terms of our stay.
Positives: the main building is lovely and the location is both beautiful and convenient. We would definitely not return.

I recently enjoyed a short and relaxing stay at the Raku House East. The rooms was comfortable, clean and well appointed. The beds were great, and I had no problem sleeping despite the occasional noise from the upstairs neighbors (something to consider if you're a light sleeper). The staff are very pleasant, and owners knowledgeable offering good suggestions on places to eat and attractions to check out. I stayed midweek, when prices are a little more reasonable which is something to consider. I would stay here again, and I would be happy to recommend Alegria to my friends.

One of the best locations in Mendocino, without any street between you and the water. An excellent hot breakfast that was different each morning. Very helpful and knowledgeable and solicitous staff. I wouldn't change a thing about the B&B.

But the town of Mendocino is small, and there's not much to do after the first day of strolling. You'll want to go on some nearby hikes or walks to fill your days, and there's an excellent guidebook in the room that describes the options.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Cove Cottage, but all the rooms seem to have nice features.

We stayed in the Cove Cottage, which is the one closest to the "river". The design is so unique - we cubby holes for storage, counters where you don't expect them. It's small, but definitely doable for a two night stay and two people. The deck was nice to just sit in and view the flowers and the water. The breakfasts were great - really great!

The place is very close to the town of Mendocino, where you can shop or eat. One night we ate dinner, then walked to the coast to view the sunset before walking home. It was a long walk, but definitely worth it.

A couple of comments - first, if you expect breath-taking ocean views, don't stay here. The view is of the Big River beach, which feeds into the Ocean. When there is high tide, you can see some waves from Cove Cottage. But it's still nice a place to go and walk along the beach.

Second, don't fill up your gas tank next door. They were charging $5.25/gallon. We drove to Fort Bragg (7 miles north and a bigger city) and found gas at under $4/gallon.

If you are looking for a place to relax, enjoy some flowers and be close to the ocean, this is the place.

Upon arriving in Mendocino after a long day's drive we stopped at the first Inn we came across and we immediately fell in love. We chose to stay in one of the small cottages and from our deck we had a fantastic view over the bay. The cottage itself was very quaint and I would have happily stayed here for an entire week. The garden is just lush, with loads of flowers and trees. We slept really well and had a fantastic organic breakfast (pancakes!) served by the lovely Inn-keepers. Highly recommendable!

We've stayed at Alegria many times over the years, and always love being there. The location is great for us. We enjoy being able to walk down to the beach directly from our cabin. We like being able to walk to the great bookstore in town, or all the way out to the bluffs. We love the breakfasts.

Elaine and Eric are excellent hosts -- a combination of consistent attention to detail in everything they do plus kindness and warmth.

Picture a cozy cottage with a deck out to the sea! Views from the bed, the chairs and even from the small shower, of the sea! Brilliant! Comfy bed. Lovely woodstove fireplace. Excellent breakfasts. Great coffee and teas, lemon bars, cookies too:). Elaine and Eric are the thoughtful hosts and they must treat their staff well as the pride of service here is felt with everyone you meet. Thanks Lisa and Toni and the rest of the staff for providing us a most peaceful retreat. Stayed 3 nights. Walked all over town, down to the beach from the private path. Beautiful oasis! And, nice rates mid-week were appreciated. Looking forward to returning to this magical find! Highly recommend!!!
