The location is great - although slightly off center compared to other B&Bs that are closer and within walking distance from the downtown. But thats where it ends. The customer service is simply horrible. First the front desk receptionist was rude, but heck she was only following the "policies". The owner Jeff showed up and was probably the most uncivilised person i have talked to. He has no courtesy of talking to women and cared more for a measly 20$ than for a good customer experience.

My boyfriend surprised me with an overnight getaway and it was wonderful. We loved everything about the place, from the romantic setting, the comfortable heavenly beds, plus the fact that we could take our dogs with us. If you are a god person, you will LOVE this place. Dogs are treated as well as the guests, and you can even take your dog to dinner with you! We will definately return, especially since we got engaged while there!

Don't stay here if you're allergic to down. The pillows and comforters are all made from down feathers. When I said I was allergic to down, the front desk said it was against their policy to change to a different comforter/pillow.

Why they had to be like that I don't know; I tracked down
the housekeeper and she had the problem fixed in a minute. They do carry non-down comforters and pillows.

I thought that I had perhaps gotten someone at the front desk who was new, so I went back the next day and got the same story. When I pointed out that some people were allergic to down, the woman shrugged.

For the amount of money that they're asking, I think that you could at least expect someone who might try to work with you if there's a problem.

The Stanford Inn by the Sea is a sensational laid back place to relax and drink in the wonders of Northern California. The Inn is rustic with pine paneled rooms, a wood burning fireplace which they clean out and set for you each day, wonderful views of their gardens and sunsets over the ocean from the balcony, complimentary wines when you arrive and complimentary orderves in the afternoon, the most delicious breakfasts you can possibly imagine-- also in the room charge, cookies or cheese and fruit waiting you in your room when you get back from your day, kayaking and outrigger canoes to rent on the Big River at the end of the property, mountain bikes to take on the wonderful trail along the Big river, a pool in a greenhouse with hot tub and sauna, massage service in a separate building. I cannot imagine being treated better by the staff...like any resort in a remote area, some of the servers do not match up to San Francisco standards. But Hey, this is not San franciso...this is a little New England like town with a Inn that encourages Pet Owners to bring their loved ones, with horses, and cats and llamas and ducks and geese and organic gardens to also enjoy. If your only idea of fun is the Ritz Carlton...a place I love too...then this may not be your cup of tea. I have made two visits and will do it again in a heart beat.

My requirements were quite tough: How to find a relaxing vacation for an ailing 75 year brother and my 15 year old son with gourmet, yet vegetarian food.

I succeeded. It started with the reservationist. I must have about 2000 hotel nights in my background. THis is the first time in the initial phone call any detail I could think of, and then some, was addressed. With two weeks notice in mid-summer, we worked out the perfect schedule and room.

Before we went to the room we enjoyed the daily 4 PM tea and snacks and then in the room we entranced by the view, fireplace, comfortable beds (even the sofa bed), free snacks in the mini-bar (and a special snack that differed each day), a delightful bathroom and a view of the Pacific in the distance and the organic farm providing part of each meal.

Each of us feared, a bit, the vegetarian food. First, to contradict any misconceptions, it was overabundent and the sweets were very sweet. The breakfast, part of the price, was not corn flakes or a fried egg, but an choice of about 12 special meals that gave each of us an opportunity to select what we wanted. And the dinner had wonderful appetizers and delicious entres. And do not lot the "Spa" fool you. THe desserts were great.

Relaxation--a pool, massages, spa, canoeing and just sitting on the porch and reading. This may be a long drive up from San Francisco, but it is breathtaking.

Mendocino is a charming town. Population 1000 and a delight to explore. Natural quaintness.

And this is an owner/manager property so hearing the philosphy of this resort from the people who created it is a pleasure.

Do your homework and find what you are looking for first. Mendocino is a lifestyle all on it's own. If you want to get back to nature- before lights, media, and chaos, spend time there. Listen to what you hear- from yourself. It is a place to restore yourself and face the world again without drugs.

The accomodations were great once you get there. I would suggest a bigger sign at the entry to know when to turn. The first sign says "next turn to . . ." and there is no second sign. Also, you will enter a lower parking lot, but the lobby is a steep right uphill afterwards - be prepared to go there.

Mendocino is always addressed with cooling fog. Therefore, you may not have any view no matter which suit you have. Hint: the hotter the valley heat rises, the faster the fog will come in.

We are not total vegaterians, so were at large with The Raven's. A few pinches of meat could help. Many more restaurants down the roard are at hand.

This is a really nice place to visit with a pet in Mendocino.

This place is not worth 300 dollars a night. Although my husband and I love Mendocino, we were extremely disappointed with the rooms at the Stanford Inn. It looks like an antiquated holiday inn. The white tiled bathrooms and cheap bathtubs are definitely not on par with the marble bathrooms one would expect from any respectable high-end establishment. A person can stay at some very trendy and posh hotels in any major city for this price or a little bit more (i.e. the W; Ritz Carleton; the Clift Hotel---we live in San Francisco) . It is not a terrible place, but it is definitely very very overpriced for what one gets. I would expect that a room here would cost $100-150/night. Although they welcome pets, pets cannot be left unattended in the rooms. Luckily our dog loves the car and could sleep for several hours while we had dinner or shopped in Mendocino Village.
