My buddy and I just discovered this small gem, even though it has been on a side street off the main Santa Cruz Ave for 8 years. The food was creative and refreshing, which was even more noteworthy since it was a Monday night. Service was excellent and friendly. The interior is small but nicely decorated. But be forewarned, the food here runs on the spicy side.
Some of the items we really enjoyed included the SHIOK SALAD (a mound of shredded lettuce and toppings with tasty dressing), DRY MEE SIAM (rice vermicelli dish), and ROTI PRATA (like Indian naan bread). The HONEY GINGER TEA was phenomenally soothing and also absorbed the spiciness of the dishes. The waiter said this is a special tea sachet they get from Singapore.
We also enjoyed two great desserts: PULOT HITAM (cold black rice soup with coconut ice cream) and GORENG PISANG (delicately fried bananas).
I really have to disagree with the 3 previous reviews for Shiok. I think the reviews are suspicious since they are all 1-2 sentence put-downs posted by an anonymous person at regular intervals.
So try this restaurant out, and let me know if you aren't as pleasantly surprised as we were. We came across Shiok by accident when we realized our regular Indian restaurant was closed on Mondays, and we happened upon this little place at the other end of the parking lot.
