We felt as if we were in a wonderful little family run place in Japan. If you want an alternative to expensive sushi restaurants, but love Japanese food, try Gombei. The decor is very basic but the atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, many families dining with children, many regulars greeted with recognition by the staff. There is a white board with the day's specials and a small but good menu. Teriyaki, tonkatsu dishes, udon, donburi, lots of homestyle food. I had one of the specials which included two pieces of grilled fish and a large bowl of nimono (mixed vegetables boiled in flavored broth. My husband had another special which had three elements, stuffed tofu, a fried meatball type dish, and some seared tuna...all lovely. And neither entree was over $12! An incredible bargain for the area. We were there on a Thursday night and the place was busy but not overwhelmed. May be harder to get a table readily on a weekend, given how wondeful it is....cc

Great restaurant overall. Good food and great prices. There are a lot to choose from and you really can’t go wrong. The chicken cutlet, the curry, Gombei, and the lunch boxes are great. The ramen and udon might not be the best when compared to the other ramen parlors in the area, but everything else is good.

Parking isn’t the best as the driveway to the small lot at the back of the restaurant is easy to miss, so parking on the street is the best way to go. The restaurant itself is nothing fancy but still inviting. It can handle parties of one up front or parties over 20 in the back room.

Great lunch spot with colleagues and dinner with friends and family.

Recently tried Gombei after a long hiatus (about ten years). I was pleasantly surprised at the expanded menu and the quality and quantity of the food. Service was a bit on the slow side; I think they are understaffed. Prices have remained reasonable, and they now accept credit cards.
The restaurant has a small parking lot, and on-street parking is sparse.

FOOD:
We had mixed results with the food here. The teriyaki chicken was a bit dry but otherwise tasty. The California rolls came with a surfeit of rice. The salmon was savory and cooked perfectly.

SERVICE:
Our waitress was very nice and attentive. Great service!

PRICE:
Our bill averaged out to around $12 per person.

Cheap, fresh and healthy. I really love this place. I think the sister restaurant in Japantown San Jose is a little better in terms of food and definitely atmosphere, but this place is close and the staff are friendly. Food is good - they also take credit, unlike the SJ location
