“Lovely hotel, but has some pros and cons”
Reviewed 22 April 2014

First, let me say that the hotel is lovely. It has an old world charm, relaxed euro-estate feel, myriad library and sitting areas, rockers on the porch, a good sized fireplace sitting area, and ample outdoor seating to visit, relax, read and/or enjoy nature. Plenty of parking, either valet or self-park. Note daily amenities fees.

Plain and simple, here's the scoop--

Pros: Great location, nice rooms (some with fireplaces), lovely sitting areas, relaxed bar area with decent menu and reasonable prices and a variety of food from snacks to meals. Hotel has a decent wine selection. The staff in high visibility areas such as the front desk and entry are helpful and professional.

Cons: Weekday construction noise. Room was a bit musty. You need to ask for extras--they aren't automatically offered. Turn down service is an example of this--and you need to ask every single night if you want it. Weird. Also, times for special offerings such as wine tastings and warm cookies are rigid. Wine tasting runs from 5-6 pm. I arrived at hotel just after 6 pm and was told wine tasting ended 7 minutes ago. For goodness sake, offer your late guest a small taste of the wine selection of the day. It is wine country after all! During the evening hospitality hour, if they run out of warm cookies or evening tea after 30-40 minutes, too bad so sad. Admittedly, I'm rather old school about hospitality--if you are going to do it, then do it well or don't do it at all. If you run out of coffee and tea, offer warm milk. If you offer turn down, do it consistently. I'd say, always plan to linger 15 minutes beyond the schedule on hospitality stations to delight your guests.

Additional notes: Stanford Park has a certain elegance and at the same time comfort. It is traditional in the classic sense. If you are looking for a chic, boutique hotel, this is not it. Neither is it a big chain hotel, or a guesthouse, or a B&B. It is a grand and lovely hotel. While renovations and construction are good news – it can be very inconvenient and disruptive for guests. I realize it is difficult to shut down the entire hotel for updates and renovations. At the same time, transparency and disclosure are important considerations and appreciated by guests booking holiday stays. Perhaps special "construction appreciation stay" promotions or waiver of guest amenities fees would make something good out of a less than perfect situation, and is certainly less costly than shutdown or reputation damage.

Finally a shout out for special assistance and staff honesty - I left a personal object behind and the manager and staff were extremely responsive and helpful in retrieving my lost item. This makes all the difference, and I look forward to returning to The Stanford Park for future visits.

Dear Cape Cod,

Thank you for taking time to write such a thoughtful review our hotel. I appreciate all of your compliments with regard to the beauty, warmth and charm of the hotel and it is good to know you enjoyed the elegance and comfort of your new guestroom as well.

We are currently in the process of renovating some areas of the hotel so that we can provide an even better experience and value for our guests. Our new fire pits in the garden courtyard will be complete in just a few weeks and I am confident they will provide relaxation and entertainment for many of our patrons. We have done our best to minimize the disruption and noise of any project because we understand that construction can be interruptive.

If we fell short in our hospitality, I am truly sorry. I will take your suggestions to heart and share them with my associates because we pride ourselves in being flexible and ensuring every guest retains positive memories of their visit to the Stanford Park Hotel.

I value the insights that our guests provide for us and we endeavor to continuously improve our hotel and hospitality as a result.

Sincerely,
Patrick

we stayed here for a weekend as part of a wedding party. The hotel was very comfortable, with very friendly service to go with attractive rooms. It is convenient to Stanford and Palo Alto generally. Given its site on the main road, we were concerned about noise when we checked in, but we had no problem at all.

Room Tip: the side facing the road, where we were, was quiet

We stayed here while we were at Stanford Parents weekend. This hotel was a wonderful place to come home to, and has everything you need for a relaxing getaway.
The rooms are very spacious and quiet and the beds are extremely comfortable. The hotel has a gracious feel to it and the service is courteous, understated and classy. I loved the ridiculously good evening cookies and the loaner bikes. The workout room and pool/spa were all great and a nice surprise.

I will stay here whenever possible, in the future.

Impressive rooms, friendly environment and good cussine. Staff is helpful and supportive. I had to stay in Standford for several weeks and became home away of home. I planed initially to rent an apartment after some days in the hotel. Then I realized it was not worth it. The Hotel had everything you need and they know how to make you feel at home.

Since our son entered Stanford University, we have enjoyed the warm ambience and accommodations of the Stanford Park countless times. The rooms are nicely appointed. The staff is warm and friendly. The lobby and bar area of the Menlo Grill seems to have a convivial atmosphere at all times of the day. The hotel is walking distance to Stanford University and conveniently located across from the Stanford Shopping Center. This is the only place we stay when visiting Palo Alto/Menlo Park area. You won't be disappointed!

Quiet, nice patio for drinks/appetizer in good weather, great service and excellent restaurant.
This is a good place to meet and dine as its close to Stanford, Palo Alto, etc. takes reservations, has plenty of space in the bar and very comfortable seating and is pretty quiet acoustically... Plenty of daily papers to choose from and 1 can either grab a few items at the bar for breakfast w/coffee or partake of the sit down dining room which is excellent.

Lovely lobby and courtyard. At night the fireplaces are lit and lovely. Staff was great and the room was large and comfortable. Good shower and two sinks one in bathroom one just outside.my room overlooked the courtyard which is lit at night. The grounds are nice and the whole place has a charming old fashioned feel. But it has all the modern amenities, including excellent wi-fi,easy to log on to. Starbucks coffee at the bar in the AM was a nice surprise.

There is a train station nearby and fairly frequent trains during the day with a audible whistle. It did not bother my sleep at all, I actually found it soothing. I never did run into the cookies.
