First, let me say that the hotel is lovely. It has an old world charm, relaxed euro-estate feel, myriad library and sitting areas, rockers on the porch, a good sized fireplace sitting area, and ample outdoor seating to visit, relax, read and/or enjoy nature. Plenty of parking, either valet or self-park. Note daily amenities fees.
Plain and simple, here's the scoop--
Pros: Great location, nice rooms (some with fireplaces), lovely sitting areas, relaxed bar area with decent menu and reasonable prices and a variety of food from snacks to meals. Hotel has a decent wine selection. The staff in high visibility areas such as the front desk and entry are helpful and professional.
Cons: Weekday construction noise. Room was a bit musty. You need to ask for extras--they aren't automatically offered. Turn down service is an example of this--and you need to ask every single night if you want it. Weird. Also, times for special offerings such as wine tastings and warm cookies are rigid. Wine tasting runs from 5-6 pm. I arrived at hotel just after 6 pm and was told wine tasting ended 7 minutes ago. For goodness sake, offer your late guest a small taste of the wine selection of the day. It is wine country after all! During the evening hospitality hour, if they run out of warm cookies or evening tea after 30-40 minutes, too bad so sad. Admittedly, I'm rather old school about hospitality--if you are going to do it, then do it well or don't do it at all. If you run out of coffee and tea, offer warm milk. If you offer turn down, do it consistently. I'd say, always plan to linger 15 minutes beyond the schedule on hospitality stations to delight your guests.
Additional notes: Stanford Park has a certain elegance and at the same time comfort. It is traditional in the classic sense. If you are looking for a chic, boutique hotel, this is not it. Neither is it a big chain hotel, or a guesthouse, or a B&B. It is a grand and lovely hotel. While renovations and construction are good news – it can be very inconvenient and disruptive for guests. I realize it is difficult to shut down the entire hotel for updates and renovations. At the same time, transparency and disclosure are important considerations and appreciated by guests booking holiday stays. Perhaps special "construction appreciation stay" promotions or waiver of guest amenities fees would make something good out of a less than perfect situation, and is certainly less costly than shutdown or reputation damage.
Finally a shout out for special assistance and staff honesty - I left a personal object behind and the manager and staff were extremely responsive and helpful in retrieving my lost item. This makes all the difference, and I look forward to returning to The Stanford Park for future visits.
