Food was outstanding but too pricey for Merced's populace. A good selection of wine but Merced will not pay $70.00 a bottle with Gallo up the road. Result is business recently closed.

“Really rather splendid”
Reviewed 26 May 2011

Stumbled upon this place by chance whilst searching for a spot of lunch. Wonderful food: perfectly done sweet potato fries, great avocado burger. Friendly service and very quick. This certainly deserves to rank more highly in the tripadvisor rankings for Merced.

“Bishop's is my favorite restaurant in Merced”
Reviewed 13 March 2011

The food is very good and artfully presented. The restaurant is a converted bakery/deli. A bar is on the first floor, and usually dinner is served upstairs. Due to the open layout, it can be loud if the bar is full. Bishop's is trying to attract a younger crowd, which I can appreciate considering the lack of night spots in Merced. The staff are very friendly.

“New Years Eve nightmare”
Reviewed 1 January 2011

Called two weeks ahead and was told only the menu would be available and not any specials. Went to restaurant and was told they were out of Godiva Chocolate to make a chocolate martini. Bartender made something resembling a pumpkin spice martini, more like a White Russian instead. Bartender than stated it was a price fixe menu because they were out of everything else for the regular menu. Sat down to eat and were told they were out of Baked Alaska, one of the two desserts offered. We were offered bread pudding instead and even after refusing the bread pudding the Server stated she was going to bring us a sample because we had never had good bread pudding. We were then offered a Sorbetto dish as an alternative to Baked Alaska. The risotto lobster croquette came and tasted like the oil was old and was stronger tasting than the filling inside. Salad was served before I had finished croquette. More than fifteen minutes passed and the fish came. The puree was room temperature and had cold spots in it. My Wife had short ribs, which were not served on the bone and tasted like pot roast. The amount of fat on the meat was so great she had to spit it into the plate. We were then offered cheesecake as another alternative, I opted for the cheesecake. After the entree plates were picked up the Server brought something similar to a Baked Alaska, but it was in a hard shell. No spoon or knife was provided to assist in tackling the dessert. The owner/chef came buy listened to the issues we had with the meal and berated us for not telling the Server. He watched as I tried to eat my dessert and stated that he had ordered every dessert to be supplied with a knife. Although, he watched me wrestle with the dessert he made no effort to get me a knife. He then told us quality was not his fault tonight as he was just the expediter. He did apologize and told us how he does quality control for another restaurant. We told him we would pay for both meals as we do not take discounts for meals. When he asked if we would return we explained that this was the only time we would eat there and we would not return. The bill came and he had not charged for the fish. I sent the Server back and we paid for the drink and both meals. It appears the Owner was trying to relieve his guilt for providing poor food, service, and apology by buying us off. Do not eat here. Quality does not exist, service is poor, and timing is not even close to being appropriate. The meal was four courses and required an hour and forty minutes to complete.
