We went to the Champagne Seafood Restaurant on 4th Avenue in San Mateo thinking it was the former place that was there. When we saw the "Grand Opening" signs outside we were surprised - and even more surprised when we went in. White linen tablecloths, high end tables and seats, waiters in black suits and ties, elegant gold and beige design, and huge 12x 18 menus weighing about 5 pounds. And the food exceeded that. We had a sliced lamb with scallions in a sauce so light and fragrant we thought we were back in Hong Kong. An order of Szechuan stir fried string beans so perfectly seasoned in garlic and traditional piquant yet fragrant sauce that was mouth watering. And a prawns in lobster sauce that matched the others in excellent seasoning that was simply delicious. None of the heavy, over the top so common today in Chinese cooking. Three spectacular dishes that could very easily have fed four hungry gluttons for two gave us another whole meal to take home. For $75 including tip, with superb and friendly service, eating this level of top drawer almost- in- Hong-Kong cooking was a steal! They are so new they are not in the Trip Advisor database. Go!
