“Wonderful neighborhood gem”
Reviewed 30 January 2012

This is one of those small neighborhood restaurants that serves great food with a slight French/Mediterranean influence (fish, beef, chicken, lamb). The restaurant has a nice wine list and inexpensive corkage if you like to bring your own vino. We've eaten here several times--mostly for special occasions--and always enjoy taking good friends. The owners like to tinker with their menu and often introduce new items and specials. Appetizers are good sized and a couple of them can make a good meal.

Also good is the sister restaurant located in Laguna Beach.

“Overpriced pretentious restaurant with mediocre food”
Reviewed 18 November 2011

Visited this restaurant many years ago, didn't like it back the and still don't like it this time. What brought me back was a purchase of a certificate from Restaurant.com with a value for $25, but requisite foor purchase was $50.

Prior to visiting the restaurant, I went on their website to check out the menu and noticed that they have Happy Hour from 4-6:30 PM, which was confirmed by a phone call to the establishment. Upon arrival, we were seated at a booth with black tape patching a hole on the seat. Mind you, we were the only guests. The glasses at our table and a table across from us did not match the rest of the restaurant's glasses, and our glasses were clearly scratched.

The menu made no mention about Happy Hour, so I inquired. The server didn't even know about this option, went in to check, and returned to confirm that all items on left side of the menu (appetizers, small bites, salads, etc.) are 50% off.

Great, I thought. So, we placed a few orders. Servers indicated that it would be quick since we're the only guests. Well, "quick" meant 20 minutes later for appetizer items. Anyhow.. no matter what you order, there are lots of goat cheese and salt in everything. Even beef stroganoff had goat cheese and the pasta and beef were undercooked.

Upon presenting the Restaurant.com certificate and a credit card, we were told that the certificate cannot be used for the Happy Hour menu because these items are considered "discounts," which cannot be combined with the certifidate. AND using certificate required cash payment for the balance of the check.

This establishment seems to be very dishonest in their practice. First, why not publicly announce the Happy Hour items on the menu without requiring guests to prompt inquiries? Secondly, cash payments at restaurants likely equate to one thing in which Uncle Sam would not appreciate. I would expect this practice at smaller restaurants but not a supposed fine dining establishment.

Upon leaving, there were two other tables dining in this mostly empty restaurant. I bet if they ordered appetizers, they would be charged the full price even though the Happy Hour price was available.

I have not used my 4 certificates purchased from Restaurant.com for this restaurant and never will. I'd rather lose the money than go back to a phony place.

“FRESH DELIGHT!!!”
Reviewed 6 November 2011

We love the food here. The location is not great--but once you've been there you'll definitely go back! The food is fresh--most of it organic--and prepared deliciously!!! We've been here a few times now and have left very satisfied. It's not a fancy place--but the atmosphere is nice and the food EXCELLENT! The service is also good.
