Our stay here was a great way for our children to explore the coastal landscape and to appreciate sustainable tourism - the hostel is eco-certified! The hostel hosts were very accommodating and the place was clean, secure and family-friendly. Fitzgerald Marine Reserve is hiking distance to the hostel; there you can explore amazing tidepools. Half Moon Bay is nearby - there we enjoyed horse-back riding at Seahorse Ranch, and had lunch at The Happy Taco!

Room Tip: Nice to have a private room

My family traveled here for a family reunion. We were coming in from different parts of the country, and there were 22 of us all together. I can say, without going into tons of detail, that we felt that we were met with hostility and a nasty attitude from the moment we walked in the door, as if we should apologize for inconveniencing them so much for being guests there.

They were angry we did not arrive at the same time (almost impossible with a group like that - 22 from around the country). They were angry the group organizer was not the first to arrive and didn't want to check us in without her. It took a lot of negotiation to allow us to pass the check-in responsibilities to someone else so that we could get into the kitchen and get cooking for the meal we had to have done in three hours and could not delay any longer.

They made special accommodation for us to use a hall they don't normally allow groups to use as we rented the rooms on both sides, which is the reason I have given them a second star. I really appreciate that. It saved our family gathering. I considered giving more stars for acting like a normal human beings several more times, shocking us, but thought, I shouldn't raise your rating based on behaving like you SHOULD to counteract the number of times that were simply intolerable behavior towards your guests.

Before we left to go to the hostel we called to ask if we should bring our own coffee. We were told, no, there is a cafe, and it's available all the time. Even Easter Sunday, we asked. Yes, even Easter Sunday, we were assured. It took three hours to get a cup of coffee from the time we first asked when we got there, and every time we asked it was as if we were causing a huge inconvenience, we just had to understand that we can't ask for things on demand, and to be patient, and that we would get it eventually. We could have brought our own coffee! You told us not to! Three hours is a long time to wait when you are having a caffeine withdrawal.

The blankets are filthy. Make sure you use your topsheet. Some very young children took theirs off and we got into a lot of trouble for it (they were upset they had to wash the blankets, which begs the question, do they ever wash the bedding?).

Anyway, some of the staff members were REALLY nice (particularly the new one, I'm sorry I can't remember his name. Chad?) Janice was not. She is the person who deals with groups. I felt like I was walking on eggshells the entire time I was there. Everyone was worried about what they were going to say or do to make the staff angry at us (not things that NORMALLY make staff angry - things like asking for your room number instead of asking your group leader for your room number. Yes it is a mistake, but no, you do not have to be NASTY about it.)

If you are going as a lone traveler and are self-sufficient and have stayed in hostels and know what it's like, then this is a beautiful location and I recommend it. If you are staying in a group and don't like being made to feel like trash for daring to rent a space out and being a guest, I don't recommend this facility.

Room Tip: Get a room with a bathroom in the room.

I was disappointed to read that you didn't enjoy your stay with us. It is always my hope that each guest will enjoy their time spent at HI-Point Montara Lighthouse. Your family stayed with us on a busy holiday week-end and in meeting the needs of many guests, I wasn't able to give your family the attention that you needed. I'm sorry about that.

When staying at hostels in the future, ours or others, it is my advice that a large group, such as yours, wanting to spend quality time together reserve the entire hostel. In fact, I admit that we should not have accepted your reservation without requiring a full-facility rental, since we just don't have the staffing to attend to a large group event and additional guests at the same time.

Again, please know that I wish your stay could have been different and that I wish you happy travels in the future!

We stayed for one night on a trip from San Francisco down the coast to Los Angeles. It was a great place to stay, located right on the edge of the rocky coast where you could walk down to a private beach. The views were breathtaking - worth staying just for this. The lighthouse is also still a working lighthouse so you can take in the views of the light over the ocean at night as well.

The facilities at the hostel were good, huge kitchen areas, we had a private room, small with single beds but clean and comfortable and no room seemed far from the kitchens or bathrooms. The kitchens were well stocked with everything you would need and very clean, there was also a large common area with fireplace.

Gates are closed 11pm - 7.30am. Service was friendly and on check-in everything was clearly explained for those not used to staying in hostels.

Room Tip: Book a private room and request a view of the lighthouse/sea

Great hostel. Stayed multiple times. Nice common area and kitchen. Well run. Clean as a pin. Great option for a trip down the coast. Popular with bicyclists too. Highly recommended. Good staff. Will return again!

Best location EVER. Best view from the room EVER. The hostel is situation right on a cliff next to the ocean, with its own private cove and beach. Breathtaking! We had a private room: tiny, but well maintained, and (astonishingly) with a Tempur-Pedic mattress. We made good use of the full kitchen -- we bought a cooler of food with us and had breakfast and packed our lunches every morning. Hostel staff was kind and helpful, and unlike some hostels, there was always somebody available to answer questions or deal with whatever.

The hostel is hardly a secret with folks in the Bay Area; it's not a quiet hideaway, but a hoppin' kind of place. The manager told us that during the summer, the hostel is fully booked pretty much every night -- 50 people in; 50 people out. It's a small hostel, and with 50 people, I would imagine it feels really busy and a bit crowded, and the bathroom sharing might get somewhat intense. Consider an off-season visit, or at least visit during mid-week.

Room Tip: I recommend the private rooms, which have the best views. Per the manager, these are booked all the...

How many places can you stay with your own lighthouse? The grounds were beautiful, the beach at your feet and our room was very small but adequate for our needs. The three of us shared a private room--double bunk on the bottom, twin bunk on top. Outside our room was a little entry way with access to a single shower and single bathroom, which we shared with the room on our right. Fortunately, no one seemed to be competing for either at the same time. The kitchen was large, with all the pots, pans, etc. ready for use. Dining was either at the table in the kitchen or at 2 other large tables in the great room, which also had sofas, reading material and games. The staff was helpful and friendly, with hot coffee drinks ready to purchase first thing in the morning (bless them!) It had everything we needed, and the price couldn't have been better!

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the ocean--and then keep your window open at night!

I stayed here 3 nights in the dorm - and was happy to call this home. The locaiton is great - right on the ocean and i saw a whale spout the first day i was there. Lovely grounds, big kitchen. Even when there are lots of people staying there you have room to move around. Excellent coffee - espresso machine on site - free wifi. Great staff!

Room Tip: The dorms are good but the private rooms are better - they have views.
