The 17 mile drive should be experienced at least once. The views are spectacular! The drive covers Del Monte forest, the south coastline and the west coastline. The south coastline is calm and includes the famous Lone Cypress. The west coastline is colder, windier and more turbulent. The west coastline also has walking paths and picnic areas.
Time permitting, stop at The Inn at Spanish Bay on the west coastline. There is a huge outdoor patio with fire pits. You can enjoy the patio without having drinks. It’s also a great place to watch the stunning sunsets while listening to the bagpiper. Make sure to take the scenic walking path just past the patio through the golf links toward the beach. It’s never crowded and there are many opportunities for some great photographs.
We also like to stop at the Pebble Beach Lodge. You can walk out to the 18th putting green while enjoying the views of Carmel Bay. There is also a gas station, bank, and deli across the street from the Lodge.
There’s a $9.50 entrance fee, but will be refunded with a $25 purchase at one of the shops or restaurants. Motorcycles are not permitted. There is no fee for bicyclists. You need to enter at least an hour before sunset. Once it is dark, it is difficult to navigate through the area since there are no street lights.
