As an exercise in envious voyeurism, this was quite interesting. Never seen quite so many expensive homes, golf clubs and private facilities clustered so close together. It's all very lovely & very manicured, and a terrific waste of precious water. I imagine the security bills get very high too. How the other half live!

Each stop on the way was more dramatic than the last. Loved seeing the sea lions basking on the rocks.

On your Pacific Coast Highway trip of California the 17 mile drive is an absolute must. It has a few different entrances, our entrance was from Carmel which is the place to stay if you wish to be near this area and also Carmel's Ocean Drive's beach to watch sunset.

You will receive a map at the entrance to the area and you are very clearly guided around the drive explaining each area. This really is an excellent area to visit and see fabulous beaches and the Elephant Seal area (please note that they close off the Seal area when they are breeding which is May/June We have done this drive twice and on each visit the Seal area was closed (May and June). You could easily spend the best part of your day here and on the last par of the trip you will be at the lodge which is a great place to stop for a meal and watch the ocean or the golf course from the veranda outside the hotel. They also serve afternoon tea.

Make sure you don't miss the Lodge as it is a nice place to visit at the end of the drive.

Enjoy!

This is really a must do when you're in Monterey. The charge was $10 for us to take the drive. The scenery is spectacular, with many interesting view points along the way. You can also stop at some of the most beautiful golf courses in the world. Many stunning homes along the drive. We stopped at all the designated stops in our guide. We spent over 3 hrs which included a light lunch at Pebble Beach.
