Hidden surprise. Great free way to see up close sea lions, harbor seals, occasional otters, gulls, other birds. Saw a young grey whale cruising the docks.

The Pier is not a pier at all but a rock jetty built to protect the inner harbor of Monterey. It is a pleasant walk away from Fisherman's Wharf near the beginning of Cannery Row and San Carlos Beach. As you're walking, you can hear the barks of the sea lions from under the Coast Guard dock as well as on the jetty itself. Once you get there you can spot starfish, sea otters swimming or resting in the kelp beds, numerous birds, and sea lions! From March to May, it is pupping season for the sea lions and harbor seals, and the jetty has plenty of sea lions to look at. You can see the babies and their mothers swimming from their rock perches, and watch Brandt's Cormorants build their nests during the spring. During summer through the winter, you'll see mostly sea lions resting on the rocks and a number of birds. It's fun to watch, and you really do get an up close view. A large pay parking lot is next to it, or you can opt to pay the metered parking which is $.25 for 10 minutes. You should plan to spend at least 30 minutes as the walk is rather lengthy once you get to the jetty. A word of caution...it smells. BAD. But if you can overcome the urge to gag, it really is an enjoyable FREE spot to watch the wildlife.

As you walk along this pier and look over the brick wall you will see sea lions sunbathing on the rocks, starfish, birds and sea otters lying on their back in the water. At the end of the Pier are hundreds of huge sea lions talking to each other! Swimming, Diving, Climbing, Floating, Fighting and just plain sunbathing. Of course, some of their personal habits leave a lot to be desired! This is well worth the short walk and the view of Monterey and the opposite coastline is lovely on a clear day. The area is fenced off so you can watch in safety and for children it is awesome! A little smelly so be warned, they eat fish after all!

Heard the familiar sounds of sea lions while wandering around Monterey and came down to the pier to find a few of them hanging out with a couple of their babies. So cute! There is a lot of fencing up and the signage was unclear if we should be in this area, but saw a few fisherman further down the pier and figured we were ok.

We saw this on TA and had to see what was different about this pier from the other two nearby.
This pier is 1/2 Coast Guard with huge security fences on the right side and a view of the Bay to your left.
At the end of the pier we saw the sea lions and Brandt's cormorants which were in their breeding plumage and were just starting to build their nests.
I got some good bird photos through the fence and to the left side of the pier.
Honestly, I like the other 2 wharfs better since you can look down and see the sea otters, sea lions, harbor seals and countless types of birds.
