“Great value in a stately property”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 April 2011

Reviews for this hotel on various sites tend to be quite polarized. Mine's polarized toward the positive, because I just had a great 3-night stay there. The location is great, especially for an easy walk to the Monterey Conference Center or to Fisherman's Wharf. The staff is friendly and well-informed. The free wifi worked well and never cut out. The (included) continental breakfast in a lovely room is very convenient. The guest room furnishings are extremely nice, including beautifully carved wooden headboards and dressers. The place is clean and doesn't smell like Lysol.

The downsides will be for those who travel heavy, and are therefore inconvenienced by the fact that this is an older hotel lacking an elevator. Also for light sleepers who can't use earplugs, because this hotel is in a downtown area near theatres and restaurants. And finally the parking is either valet ($17/night with unlimited in and out) or public ($7 per entry two "short" blocks away). But those facts are well covered in this review and others, so if you would find these things troublesome but book there anyway, then that's pretty much on you!

Even though my room fronted directly on the main street (Alvarado), I slept soundly, enjoyed the conveniences mentioned above, and found it a bargain for my business travel stay. Colleagues stayed there too and enjoyed it as well. I'll be staying there again next time I'm in Monterey.

The Monterey Hotel is in downtown Monterey, very close to Fisherman's Wharf and shopping, and an easy one-mile walk along the shore from Cannery Row and the Monterey Aquarium. The staff were outstanding and bent over backwards to make sure we had a nice stay. The hotel itself is in an older building and is generally pretty nice, but our room had paper-thin walls and was at the same level as the roof of the building next door so that we could hear the machinery on the roof running during the night. Our room was pretty small - very similar to what you'd find in a typical European hotel - but other rooms we saw were bigger and had desks and other features our room didn't have. The "continental" breakfast consists mostly of breads/muffins, yogurt, cereals and juice - no meats or cheeses such as you would normally find in a continental breakfast. WiFi was free and very fast.

Nice bonus: When we were there (March 2011) there was a farmer's market from 3-8pm on the street in front of the hotel. The market had tons of fresh produce and lots of great street food.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights in October 2010. On the second afternoon, the housekeeper spilled my husband's pill case on the floor of the bathroom, and then hid the evidence by putting the cleanser-soiled pills back in the case. I noticed a couple of pills on the floor and then discovered the broken case and discolored pills. We spent the rest of the trip arranging to have four different emergency prescriptions filled (after hours, on a Friday night, in a different time zone). Management apologized and did comp our room for both nights, but this experience truly ruined our stay -- and threatened my husband's health.

I should also mention that we asked for a quiet room and were given one a few feet across from a building under construction. Oh, and when we returned home from our trip, we had bedbugs in our luggage. Not necessarily from this hotel, mind you, but would you chance it after all the other problems?

The elevator does not work so be prepared to use the stairs. The fourth floor has the best view. Its noisy at night due to nearby bars and lack of soundproof. Location is convenient in downtown Monterey. Decor and Furniture is historical and a real treat. Staff are very friendly and helpful.

Yes, the location is fine but the amenities are bare bones. Have stayed in much nicer places on the peninsula. Thought there was a lack of "soul" here. Sorry just my opinion. Can't really put my finger on it but we won't be staying here again.

The hotel location is excellent, with the Monterey airbus one block away. The rooms are fine, the bathrooms are clean, the beds are nice. The breakfast is nothing special but it is not bad either. No complaints.

Stayed here october 2009.

Went round a few hotels in monterey which i found rather expensive and still charged ten dollars for wifi.

Finally found this little gem of a hotel, in a great location, great room and superb value.

Definitely recommend it to anyone statying in Monterey.
