A grand old hotel that has been redone but retains the grand old hotel feel. Beautiful woodwork, nice colors. Exceptionally clean which is most important. Includes continental breakfast. Located in the center of monterey so you can walk to restaurants and Fisherman s Wharf. This is convenient because there is no onsite parking. There is valet parking for $17 or you can park yourself in a lot a few blocks away. The rooms are small and ours had a king size bed which took up most of the room and the bathrooms are also small but how much room do you need to sleep?
We got a great deal online. I would definitely stay here again.

We stayed one night since we were running the Big Sur race. The hotel is so loud- you can hear everything from room to room, especially the room above. Walking around- showering, flushing toilets, speaking. We stayed on the 3rd floor in a larger room / room and Livingroom- all windows looked out to a wall so there is no view. The breakfast in the morning was bagels, toast and fruit. The staff was not overly friendly- not rude but just there. The location is great- I will give it that. For $200++ for the night it was fine but if you want quiet- this isn't the hotel. And no lift- stairs only

Yes its good value and has a great central location. It's clean and the rooms are quiet. All looking good so far...

BUT this will not suit everyone. The lift it seems has been out for more than six months and there is NO intention we were told to fix it. As we stayed they were replacing the hall carpets on all the floors. Why did they not think to fox the lift instead ?

Sorry previous reviewer no lift IS AN ISSUE. Maybe not for Chris H but please consider others less fortunate to be able to walk up more than six flights ? Or maybe even disabled guests maybe ? Just a thought.

The breakfast is terrible by the way. Unless you like toast. The term continental is far too generous.

To end on a good note yes there is free wifi, rooms are large enough, there are nice touches in period features and the staff really are great.

Great if you are fit and healthy but have as noted above don't bother if stairs are a problem or you expect a decent breakfast included.

Room Tip: If street facing then the higher the better. Each floor has two larger rooms again the higher the be...

There was a farmers market in the street where the hotel is on the night of our arrival - we had to do a slight detour but no big deal. Local multi storey car park is 200 yards away and only $7 per 24 hours. Nice old traditional hotel, pleasant and accommodating staff. The lack of a lift is no big deal - porter will take your luggage no problem. Would stay next time we visit Monterey.

My husband and I stayed here recently for 2 nights when visiting Monterey. We found this hotel to be a perfect fit for out needs. It's location is right downtown within close walking distance to the wharf, cannery row, etc. There is the option for valet parking, but we used a parking garage close by (7$ for 24hr). The staff were very kind and pleasant. The hotel has a beautiful Victorian decor throughout it and make it feel like a fancier hotel. There is a decent complimentary breakfast that at least gets you started for the day. When readings previous reviews about the noise, I was a bit worried going into the trip. But, honestly we didn't have any problems with noise from the street (we were staying during the middle of the week). There were a lot of seagulls in the area that we could hear early in the morning, but it didn't bother us. Thought that the prices are very reasonable given the location and nice feel that the hotel has. Would definitely stay here again!

We stayed here Sunday, March 23rd on a booking from Expedia for $60/night. WOW. The Hotel was built in 1904, the decor is replicas of beautiful carved beveled mirrors, chairs, fainting couches, 8' tall secretaries, side tables, gorgeous headboards. We stayed in room 303. There is no elevator, so it is a little hike up beautiful carpeted steps, you can take a breather on the landing, maybe faint on the couch or sette. Room was small, bed comfortable, marble floor in small bathroom. I think it was considered huge "back in the day". Shower flows like Niagara. Shower wall mount dispenser has shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, but not bar soap. With California drought in full force, this place could use some lo flo shower heads. Breakfast was in a large room with fresh roses on each table, a great selection: Seattle's Best coffee, cold and hot (instant oatmeal) cereal, apples, great selection of teas, big bagels, jelly, honey, cream cheese, assorted delicious muffins, oj, you get the picture. NO PARKING, need to use the all day park for $7 in parking structure. A little considered as we brought our bikes on a rack. It does have charm, you are a walk away from the wharf, shops, restaurants, just enjoy like! Walls are thin if the neighbors are noisy, you can hear a lot of hallway noise, and the light from the hallway lights up your room at night, but there is no elevator noise. Enjoy!

Very pleasant stay. The room was extremely small, just enough space for a bed and 1 person to move around it, very clean and comfortable and conveniently located. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Skip breakfast.
