“Charming hotel”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

My husband and I stayed here for 3 days while he was on a business trip. The Monterey delivers exactly what it promises. Comfortable beds, pleasant helpful staff. We were upgraded to a fireplace suite room on the 3rd floor. True, the elevator doesn't work, but who can't walk up a flight or two of stairs? Help with luggage was offered. Breakfast was nicely presented, great coffee, but simple. Location was perfect - right on Alvarado Street, a block from where his meetings were, 2 blocks from the wharf. I loved feeling like I was in old time Monterey, not in a "big box" hotel that could have been anywhere. Free, high-speed internet is included. As a 110 year old building it has charm. A little walking noise from the room above could be heard, but it was negligible. Valet parking was convenient and timely, we followed their recommendation of giving 15 minutes notice, usually took much less than that. I would go back.

Room Tip: Ask for a suite and a quiet room.

I was in town for the Big Sur Marathon and was looking a hotel close to downtown and the Expo. The Monterey hotel was the perfect choice. Very much has the feel of a bed & breakfast. The staff was friendly, very customer oriented and accommodating to my needs. Lots of smiles and very helpful.
A couple of items of note, no elevator so if stairs are a problem this might not be the place for you. Very small, old TV in my room and was located in a shelf high up on the wall. Made it difficult to watch much of anything but that was not a huge concern for me since I was in town for the Marathon. Only other note, there was some hallway noise on my first night which did wake me up but quieted down fairly quickly.
Overall still a definite recommend and I would not hesitate to choose again!

Room Tip: I had one of the petite rooms which was fine for just me and the fact I was not going to be in the r...

We stayed here last week for one night. The decor is lovely - lots of charm and character. Our room was on the 4th floor - quite a hike up the stairs, which we already knew (no working elevator), but had to stop on Floor 3 each time to catch our breath. God bless the bellman, who goes up and down all the time - give him a good tip!

The room was very small but clean. The main problem I had with it was the smell! Our room smelled like nobody had opened the doors or windows in fifty years! Yuk!!! We kept the windows open wide the whole time we were there. One can tell that the place went through a period of time as a "flop-house" (confirmed by the staff), but it was a very good value, with a $30.00 coupon for the restaurant across the street (good food) and a good continental breakfast.

Overall, it was OK, but I'm not sure I'd stay there again.

Room Tip: Try to get a room below the 4th floor and facing the main street if possible - and bring a spray bot...

We enjoyed our one night stay, clean and comfortable , staff all very nice, continental breakfast looked good but we had a coupon for the eatery across the street. Room was very small, king bed with very little room to walk around bed, small bathroom, however we were not there to sit in the room so it was perfect for us. Short 20 minute walk to Cannery row and $10 cab ride back. Had a wonderful time there for our 29th wedding anniversary, we will definitely stay there again.

A grand old hotel that has been redone but retains the grand old hotel feel. Beautiful woodwork, nice colors. Exceptionally clean which is most important. Includes continental breakfast. Located in the center of monterey so you can walk to restaurants and Fisherman s Wharf. This is convenient because there is no onsite parking. There is valet parking for $17 or you can park yourself in a lot a few blocks away. The rooms are small and ours had a king size bed which took up most of the room and the bathrooms are also small but how much room do you need to sleep?
We got a great deal online. I would definitely stay here again.

We stayed one night since we were running the Big Sur race. The hotel is so loud- you can hear everything from room to room, especially the room above. Walking around- showering, flushing toilets, speaking. We stayed on the 3rd floor in a larger room / room and Livingroom- all windows looked out to a wall so there is no view. The breakfast in the morning was bagels, toast and fruit. The staff was not overly friendly- not rude but just there. The location is great- I will give it that. For $200++ for the night it was fine but if you want quiet- this isn't the hotel. And no lift- stairs only

Yes its good value and has a great central location. It's clean and the rooms are quiet. All looking good so far...

BUT this will not suit everyone. The lift it seems has been out for more than six months and there is NO intention we were told to fix it. As we stayed they were replacing the hall carpets on all the floors. Why did they not think to fox the lift instead ?

Sorry previous reviewer no lift IS AN ISSUE. Maybe not for Chris H but please consider others less fortunate to be able to walk up more than six flights ? Or maybe even disabled guests maybe ? Just a thought.

The breakfast is terrible by the way. Unless you like toast. The term continental is far too generous.

To end on a good note yes there is free wifi, rooms are large enough, there are nice touches in period features and the staff really are great.

Great if you are fit and healthy but have as noted above don't bother if stairs are a problem or you expect a decent breakfast included.

Room Tip: If street facing then the higher the better. Each floor has two larger rooms again the higher the be...
