“Stay Away, FAR FAR FAR AWAY!”
Reviewed 26 October 2010

This place looks great online and the reviews seem OK so we booked 3 nights. We showed up on a friday evening after driving Rt 1 from SLO. Checked in and walked up 4 flights of stairs to our room. we expected this and knew there was no elevator. Our room however we were not expecting. The walls are PAPER THIN and we could hear EVERYTHING happening in the rooms around us. Trust me some things NO ONE should have to hear, especially when the beds are THAT close to the wall and NOT SECURED to anything. if you catch my drift. And if someone used the toilet, shower, sink, tv or anything else we heard that too, from ALL AROUND.. the bed was a rock and i've slept in Motel 6's with more comfortable mattress's. As for the free continental breakfast the coffee was in a thermos dispenser and warm at best. only fruit was cantaloupe and the select of other breakfast items was poor. But again it's a free continental breakfast so our expectations were low. The only thing this place had going for it was that we could walk to anywhere but there are a million other hotels in the area so pick one of those.

Stayed 2 nights - central location with a great complimentary continental breakfast !
Free internet and printer to use !
Room not large but very comfortable and clean.
Staff were friendly and helpful - no parking but valet worked well !
A little bit of town /traffic noise - but can be expected for a city centre location.
Excellent value for money !

There are some great things about this hotel:
1) Price - its excellent value for money for a very expensive area
2) Location - slap bang in the middle of town, great central location
3) Staff are friendly and helpful
4) Free breakfast and great spread - muffins, bagels, organic teas, coffee, yoghurt, spreads
5) Free wifi in the hotel and there's even a computer and printer which you can use for free on the ground floor

Downside:
1) It gets very noisy down the main street, which is why the hotel provides ear plugs. Sleep early and wake up early to avoid the noisy periods. There's a loud garbage truck that comes early in the morning. If you are heavy sleeper you should be ok
2) Rooms are very very small, and furnishings are ornate, so not very good if you have young kids. If you aren't petite, you will find the toilet and room a squeeze
3) There isn't a functioning lift, so be prepared to walk up stairs with luggage. Request for a room on the second floor if you can so that you only have to make it up to the second floor.
4) Parking - they don't have their own car park so we had to shift the car a few times to follow the parking restrictions on the street

Overall, if you know what you're getting yourself into, staying here can be very pleasant and save you heaps.

Where to start. EVERYTHING in Carmel was booked... Some convention. Called some hotel booking number said there was a room available. Also said it was a smoking room. We were later told that the whole hotel was non smoking and we would be charged 150 nix if we smoked. Also the price was different on e we got to the hotel than what the Booker told us... By a good 40 bux. Then we had to drag our stuff up 3 flights of stairs (no working elevator). Room was SUPER SMALL. The headbord of the bed was leaning over the bed about 6 inches from the wall. The pillows were SUPER SMALL also. About the size of small throw pillows. In a fit of frustration I threw one of the mini pillows at the crappy headboard and guess what came off of it?... A FRICKIN BUG!!! Ugh!!! Broken air conditioning... View of a nasty alley and a gross wall... Very non helpful staff. Would not ever go back!!!!!

Great location, right in the middle of Downtown and a short walk to the beach. Outside of the rock hard beds, we couldn't be happier with the Hotel. Would stay again.

We stayed here for two nights on a visit to Monterey and Carmel. We hadn't booked in advance but we got a very reasonable rate at the hotel in high season (although the weekend rates were higher than weeknights). The room was exceptionally clean and we had plenty of space. As it was an old hotel the soundproofing wasn't fantastic but a few creaks didn't bother us.

The best part was the location. Right slap bang in the middle of town, it was the perfect point from which to explore the town on foot or by tram (tram stop directly across from the hotel).

The staff were really friendly and very helpful. Breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice for a continental breakfast. The muffins were to die for! Only a short walk to the pier to see the seals and try out the chowder!
