“Little Gem in Monterey”

We drove down from SF along PC1 on our way to LA and stayed here for an overnight. The front desk staff were very friendly and gave great tips for restaurants and sites in the city. Check-in was a breeze and we found our room to be clean, spacious, warm, and inviting. They even gave us a log to burn in the fireplace!

Parking was not an issue and was an extra $15 with in/out. The B&B is within walking distance of the wharf but I do recommend eating early. We went to Pt. Lobos to watch the sunset and then came back into downtown around 8:30 to eat and most restaurants were not seating as they closed at 9. Monterey is a sleepy town and shuts down early so don't count on a late night.

Also, I know I might get beat up on this but....the aquarium is waaaaay overpriced and not worth it. We always heard about the famous Monterey Aquarium but found it to be packed with families crowding around windows to look at a couple of penguins and jellyfish. Then we got hounded by sales folks for a membership. We kept saying we were from Texas and would only be coming once. I think they have great marketing, because it was one of the "must sees" on our trip....but did not deliver.

We loved getting a bottle of red wine, driving out in our convertible to Point Lobos, sitting on the rocks and watching the gorgeous sunset. Waves crashing, orange light, and sea lions barking below, as seagull flew overhead. Now that...is how we vacation!

If you are looking for a good value in the pricey Monterey/Pac Grove/Carmel area, the Merritt House Inn is a great choice! Book it!

I booked this place because of the price and location; my parents needed a a weekend away and it was perfect! The owner was so kind to my parents, they are looking forward to going back! (And that never happens!) They were happy with the room, and the amenities, but were more impressed with the service and kindness they were greeted with. My dad could not stop thanking me for such a wonderful birthday present. Definitely going to recommend this place!

What a charming inn! My family spent the night here, taking two delightful rooms on the ground floor opening out onto a patio and pretty garden. The rooms are beautifully decorated, cheerful and very comfortable: my daughter’s and my room was hung with lovely flower prints on pale yellow walls, with a corner fireplace, my husband and son’s room had a more masculine theme, with attractive marine prints and a blue color theme (and also had a fireplace). The beds were divine with comfortable duvets, and we had a quiet and good night’s sleep. The staff was helpful and friendly, and the location is fantastic, right in the middle of the historic district (one of the inn buildings is also historic) and only a couple of blocks from Fisherman’s wharf. Wish we could have spent a week here!

Wonderful, clean and modern Inn. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Centrally located near the wharf and convention center- all within walking distance. A plus is the corner store and restaurants, all within walking distance, you'll never have to drive anywhere! I would definitely return.

Merritt House was the perfect spot to stay in Monterey for our Girls weekend. Our room was nicely appointed and cozy. Since it was cool we were able to have a fire in the fireplace on the evening and morning of our stay. The location is perfect to be able to walk to all the quaint shops as well as Fisherman's Warf. We got up early and walked the 2 blocks to Starbucks and then came back foe a nice continental breakfast. We also enjoyed some time in the courtyard just out the French doors of our room.
Compared to the cost and lack of ambience in the chain hotels it was the perfect bargain.

We recently stayed at the Merritt House Inn and found it to be a very charming B&B. It is within walking distance of downtown Monterey and Fisherman's Wharf. Edmund was especially helpful with restaurant recommendations and other information. The breakfast area is somewhat small but it is possible to take food back to your room. Recommend staying in the private cottage for extra room. #26 has a very large outdoor patio.

Room Tip: Private cottage, Room #26
