“A great find, during our time of need!”
Reviewed 31 May 2010

Stayed two nights in a wonderful quiet room up on the third floor with a fireplace~ Had been in town for a conference (at a different hotel), but wanted to stay over for the Memorial Day weekend. As our conference hotel was filled, we could not extend our stay. Called the Colton Inn via an ad in the California AAA Travelbook on very short notice. Wonderful staff, affordable rate (for a holiday weekend). Goodies include free breakfast, cookies, candy and fruit rest of the day and night, coffee, tea and juice, free DVD movies to checkout, free parking, and close to all the major Monterey sights to see. Thanks so much to Lisa and Michelle for their wonderful assistance!

We stayed at the Colton Inn for one night on our way back to San Francisco from a visit to Hearst Castle. The desk staff was friendly and helpful. They have coffee, tea and snacks in the tiny lobby. The also have free wifi and several hundred dvd's that guests can borrow (three at a time). The rooms are very basic, clean but tired. There was a fireplace in the room and the mesh thing that opens and closes was broken and hanging. Managers please note: the first floor passageways are dirty. And the worst is the green carpet-like covering on part of the walkway on the first floor. Hideous color and very dirty and all kinds of spots and spills. It really makes the place look like a dive, even though the rooms were clean.

Basic hotel, front desk closes over night, basic Continental breakfast self-served from foyer, but the rooms are fairly spacious, clean and tidy with basic cooking facilities. Short drive from Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf and Aquarium.

Once again (this is the 5th trip) we enjoyed the staff, rooms, treats and location of the Colton Inn. The rooms are warm and comfortable, the beds better than most. The location is a nice walk to downtown, warf or beach. We love this hotel and will return for many years to come.

Hotel staff was usually very friendly and acknowledged us whenever we entered the lobby. Stayed 2 nights and breakfast was pretty good each morning with 11 varieties of cereals, 4 different types of bread with a variety of pastries and bagels, hard boiled eggs - and juice, milk, and hot chocolate. VERY CLEAN!! Roomy.

CONS: Though the hotel is nice, I wouldn't rate it the top place for a nice romantic getaway! My husband and I stayed here on our 2nd anniversary and decided to try this hotel instead of going to the hotel we stayed on our honeymoon due to cheaper rates. One thing that helped us choose between this and few other hotels was that this had a gas fireplace in the king size room that we wanted. But, FIREPLACE WAS A JOKE!!! We came back from a long day of touring and shopping and decided to relax and light the log that they give you for the fireplace. They state it lasts 4-5 hours, but ours only lasted barley 2 1/2 hours before it went out and you have to pay an additional $5 per log! - except they give you one each morning when cleaning the room! Also, the 2nd night we stayed we tried to light the fireplace & it lit right up but immediately burned out within 2 minutes. We tried to go down to lobby to get another but was closed and locked at 9:08pm when they state they are open until 11pm!!! Also, if you want a room with a balcony - it's nothing too nice. It has chairs to sit at, but the view below is off dead grass and rusted metal along with other junk. Also, didn't bother us but there is a fire station right across the street, so if you don't want to be awaken by sirens - don't stay here - we are used to it as we live near one, but could be very annoying if not used to the extra noise!

PROS: CLEAN, FRIENDLY STAFF, HOT WATER, GOOD BREAKFAST, NICE LOCATION AND ROOMY!
OVERALL - I'd say we had a very nice stay, but would rate this better for business or family rather than for couples looking for romance!

Spent one night here on our way south along Hwy 1. The reception staff, presumably the owner, was very friendly and helpful. The room was large and clean. The hotel is located at walking distance from the harbour. Good breakfast (by American standards).
