We had a great time staying at the Portola Hotel & Spa at Monerey Bay. Great, great location, everything was walking distance to whatever you might need or see! Our room was clean and a outdoor private patio which most hotels don't have. We walked outside to the wharf, it was a fun place to be. Many neat shops and restaurants it was hard to chose which one to try. If you had questions the concierge was the person to ask, she had a great smile, pleasant and friendly. Valet personnel was always there to help get our car, again with a friendly smile. Yes, I would highly recommend this is the place to stay.

Stayed here for a corporate event. Web speeds were too slow to get any work done.
rooms are comfortable as long as it's not too hot. (no A/C)
Great location, close to the water, warf, downtown, attractions.
Great food for our event. Nice conference rooms.
Nice furniture, but some things could use an update, like the sliding doors in the room.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with A/C if it's hot.

I stayed 4 nights and enjoyed myself. The Portola is a wonderful place to stay, and very accommodating to the Government traveler. I used the gym while there and ate at Jack's restaurant for breakfast. I would recommend someone stay here without hesitation.

Room Tip: Quieter rooms are across the short outside walkway.

We stayed for 2 nights, and had a really nice stay here. The hotel is very nice, the room was clean and well furnished, with a small fridge, and coffee maker. My only complaint is not having free wifi in the room. Great location, would stay again for sure.

This hotel is certainly adequate with good service and comfortable rooms. The staff at the front door are friendly and helpful. The place is huge and has many meeting rooms, levels and locations. The rooms are fine, but they are not exceptional. For me, this hotel is one step away from an average rating. This is why. There is dust in the rooms, there are places in the bathroom where pieces of the wood underneath the sink are falling apart. The carpeting in the halls is very frayed and dirty. The carpeting in the rooms is also just one step away from frayed. The balcony for our room was fine, but the furniture was old and not in good repair. This hotel is one step away from needing a complete renovation to freshen it up and become more aligned with offerings at other hotels, such as even Hilton Garden Inn. I would not stay here again as I felt it was over priced for the condition of the hotel. Plus, we were there during a weekend long festival of some kind, and the music from the festival was extremely loud and annoying.

This hotel looks very dated from the outside and doesn't really look very attractive. Typical 1970's build. It is also quite sprawling with lots of separate bits to it so be careful on booking that you really nail down where your room will be.

The lobby area is interesting with the trees inside which is a nice touch and is light and airy. Initially we were allocated a room which on entering smelt musty, we could hear some sort of generator and was next to the laundry room. Also it was on the main road. We live on a main road in the UK but given the windows are not double glazed in the property, even with them shut the noise was horrific. We rang to complain (in a nice British way) and trailed downstairs to reception. She gave us another room and do you think we could find the wretched thing? No we could not. We spent a good 20 minutes searching for it and gave up and trailed back to reception who were busy so we spoke to the lady on the Concierge desk.

She looked completely horrified when we showed her which room we were supposed to be in and told us not to bother to find it...er...right... and said that was no good and went to front desk to get us another room. She asked us to let front desk know for our bags and I have to say the temperature dropped to freezing when we had explained what the concierge had done for us.

So our third room was over looking the central courtyard so it was peaceful. It was also baking hot. There is a ceiling fan in each room which is worse than useless. We wouldn't go out and leave the sliding doors to a first floor balcony open in a hotel in the UK, let alone abroad so as we wanted to go out there was no way to let any air in. We also noticed a very odd noise in the room but at this stage we were tired so just settled in. In each room we went in the bathrooms are all very similar and very dated. You also have to have arms like an Orangutan to reach the toilet paper holder from the toilet.

However, it was all very clean. Furniture looks a little dark and heavy for the type of look they are trying to achieve. Also, not to give free wi-fi access in this day and age is just ridiculous. No free mineral water as well! Bottles are tantalising on offer in your room but you have to pay for them which is particularly tight.

In the morning the noise in the room and the heat were driving us mad. In the corner of the room there was a boxed in area and we felt the wall vibrating so we asked front desk for an engineer. Finally somebody who works in this hotel who had the time to listen to us, empathise and do something about it. He said the boxed in area was the extractor fan from the kitchen below - hence the noise, vibration and heat. He said nobody should be in that room unless the hotel is full and he would do something about it immediately. Which he did. Within 5 minutes we had been upgraded to a ground floor suite with two king beds and a small outside area.

None of the above will come as any shock to the hotel given we lodged our complaints in the correct way all the way through our stay and they also sent us a survey to fill in where again I listed out what had happened - and the hotel did respond but only to say they hoped we would be back. Hmmm...

Apart from the room issues, the hotel is in a great spot for everything. We hired bikes just near the hotel and cycled all the way through to Monterey and beyond along designated cycle routes. Fantastic way of getting around and we stopped off at the Aquarium and bought a sandwich lunch to eat along the way. We also walked to Cannery Row along the same path one night and back for a beauitful meal and felt entirely safe. Fisherman's Wharf also has some great places to eat.

Probably our best night was the pub attached to the hotel - what a find! Great food, reasonably priced and fantastic atmosphere.

The pool at this property is situated in one of the many buildings which is separate from the main complex so you have to be prepared to walk to it. It's ok. It isn't all that big and is sandwiched between a car park and a busy road - so it really isn't peaceful at all.

I don't know how much a suite is normally but we felt overall the hotel was very pricey given what you get. The ground floor suite has a small outside seating area which is nice although given it is in the courtyard area it depends on which suite you get as to whether you get any sun on it.

The courtyard area is open to people coming and going from outside the hotel. We know this as on waking up and going outside to sit on our outside area some charming person had managed to practice safe sex in the night but failed to the practice chucking the used condom in a bin but had instead just left it on the outside wall of our patio. Nice.

I would think the rating for this hotel depends on the level of customer service you get, and what room you have to start off with. For us, it wasn't a great experience to be honest. It was also pricey for what you got.

I love this hotel and have stayed here close to a dozen times over the last 8 years. It is in a great location and I like the green focus they have at the hotel. You get a chocolate chip cookie when you check in and the hotel overall is just so peaceful.
