Given how much it cost to stay in this hotel expectations were high when we arrived. When you pay a lot you expect a lot. Fortunately the hotel did not disappoint and except for a few minor issues we had a good stay over 6 nights. This is a large hotel that is geared towards the convention market and so that obviously affects the atmosphere. We booked a top floor room so that we could get a view. We were glad we did otherwise I probably would not be writing such a positive review. Without the view it would have been ordinary. The view was great. The room and bathroom were a good size and had everything we needed and some nice extra touches. Bear in mind that the top floor, 7, is only actually the 5th floor as 1 is ground and for some reason there is no 2nd floor. The toilet broke on two days and the shower backed up so I had to make two trips to reception to ask for those to be fixed. I noted no apology or anything from the staff who did not seem particularly friendly, but the issues were fixed quickly (but its a shame they did not fix it properly the first time). I found the lack of free WiFi in the room annoying. I have stayed in 2 star hotels in third world countries that have fast and free WiFi. There is free WiFi in the lobby, but that is not really what one needs. We tried to log in and pay on line for in-room WiFi but the system did not work and we were unable to complete the transaction on two occasions. It all seemed very unnecessary and annoying when everything else is of a high standard. Overall I would be happy to recommend this hotel and would stay there again.

Room Tip: Go for the top floor if you want a view

Great location for this lovely complex of a hotel. RIGHT on the pier--reviews/maps made me think it was off the pier but it was right there--we should have parked here for our whale watching tour! We got a great deal on travelzoo for $149 for a weekend night including mimosa breakfast. Breakfast was amazing and tasty and fresh, with tons of mimosas!
Hotel itself was clean and large and exceeded expectations. Would highly recommend this for a Monterey stay, can't imagine a better place!

The Portola Hotel & Spa was a perfect place to attend a conference and enjoy the city. The staff was polite, friendly and helpful, as was the valet service. The Courtyard rooms were so convenient to the Wharf and the patio was a perfect place to unwind. I look forward to returning to the Portola Hotel & Spa in Monterey next year.

Room Tip: Choose the Courtyard room, if possible. Easy access down the stairs to the wharf and the patio is wo...

We have stayed in a number of hotels large and small in Monterey. However the Portola was our least favorite. The staff uncaring and robotic, the facility sterile. Upside, the rooms are a good value, and they are nice. However if you are looking for a warm ambiance or friendly helpful staff my recommendation is to look elsewhere.

Having stayed here twice, I want to return again and again. The hotel is lovely. Our room spacious, clean, and it just felt refreshing. Maybe it's just the smell of the ocean (and the sea critters out there), but this hotel is not pretentious like some I've visited. For a large facility, I really got a boutique feel.

Now about the location. Truly can't be beat, especially for families. Everything to entertain, all within a short walk.

I don't know about the dining on site as we spent all our meals on the wharf or in Carmel, just a quick drive away.

We all get the biggest smile when we're greeted by the friendly sea lions.

Note: There is no such thing as free parking in Monterey. If you think you can park on the street and not be ticketed, think again. The city is exceptionally efficient in this respect.

Our experience at Portola was good, but not nearly up to the 4-diamond standards inidcated on the plaques in the lobby.

The lobby is an atrium. Nice, but a little messy with leaves throughout.

Check-in was okay. We got to the hotel early (noon). They said our room was being cleaned, so we walked to Cannery Row for lunch. When we checked back at almost 3, the room still was not ready. That was disappointing. A few minutes more of waiting (and lots of calls by the guy at the front desk), and they said it was done.

The room itself was spacious and nicely decorated. It had a "balcony" overlooking the "courtyard," which turned out to be a patio with a flowerbox looking directly at a wall of the next buidling. The hotel is spread out across several buildings. All of the "balconies" that we could see, however, looked onto "courtyards" that were really cement walkways with a few dull flowerboxes. Since the room didn't have air conditioning and it was really hot in there, even though the temperature outside wasn't above 70, we sat outside on our balcony... looking at the wall. Not quite what I had in mind when I was thinking about a weekend trip to Monterey.

Also, we walked by the pool and it was small and overloaded with people and kids everywhere. We skipped that.

I had a Travelzoo coupon for a great rate. So for the price paid, it was good. If I go another weekend, I'll stay at one of the quaint hotels in Carmel.
