“Old school hotel management...staff is good..location is the best!”
Reviewed 15 August 2014 via mobile

After paying over $270 for one mid week night I was surprised to be asked to pay $9.95 for 24 hours of internet. Also surprised to asked to pay $2.00 per bottle for WATER in the room. We have been traveling the last month and this is the first time we had to pay for internet! If the Portola was Motel 6 I would understand....but it is a 3 star hotel and in today's world Internet should be included...just odd thinking on the part of the hotel management. Staff was good with quick check in good info on places to eat. Hotel is laid out with gym and pool across walkway/Fisherman's wharf access. Odd to see guests walking across this high traffic walkway in their swimming gear.

We had a delightful stay at the Portola Hotel & marveled at the friendly, cheerful & very professional staff. The hotel is beautiful, very clean & newly renovated. The location is the BEST! It's right on the water & in the heart of charming Monterey. The Concierge is top notch, knows her way around & gave us excellent advice from start to finish, sending us to all the perfect places that fit our preferences & needs. We could not have been more pleased. It was all so perfect & far exceeded our expectations.

Green Features: They are a Certified Green Hotel, terrific! I love that.

This is not a hotel to stay at unless you are part of a large company conference and everything is on the company.

The hotel styling is very outdated and seriously needs maintenance/upgrading. In parts paint is coming off, wall tiling is jagged or incomplete and there is a lot of uncleared up seagull mess.

Our room was dark with no view and was seriously overlooked.

Very poor selection of TV channels and you have to pay for wifi (!!)

Front desk service is for the most part cold and impersonal. We left to go to the much smaller, cosier and personal Mission Inn in Carmel Valley.

The pool area is right next to the motorway which is so loud you can hear it through headphones with music on (not very relaxing...) Plus the pool is across the street from the actual hotel, so you have to cross over and get accosted by the various homeless people in the area (also not very relaxing).

The hotel is also super noisy (motorway + seagull combination).

All round not good.

We enjoyed our stay at this first class hotel. We had a corner room with a great view. The valet parking was a plus. We had lunch and dinner at Jack's and the food was great. The two day Aquarium Tickets was a plus.

Quasi luxurious surroundings and excellent location make this hotel a perfect choice to discover Monterrey.

We booked this hotel in last minute, so weren't too sure about what we would get. The reception staff was very good, made us feel welcome and offered some warm cookies.

We were given a large room with 2 king size beds, a massive flat screen TV, and a very spacious bathroom. All was decorated in a maritime style and we had a wonderful view on the bay.

Room service was also very good, everyone in the family was happy after a very long drive.

The hotel is located not far from the piers, which offer all sorts of sea food dishes, and an excellent seal watching spot.

The hotel also has one of the best equipped hotel gyms I have experienced in the states, as well as a spa.

We would return in this excellent hotel.

We stayed here for one night during car week in Monterey. We arrived to find the hotel taken over by RM Auctions. There were fabulous cars on display in front and in the lobby. Upon check in we were given warm cookies. When we reached our room, we were surprised to have been upgraded to a view room. The rest of the room was as good as the view. It was well decorated, had an incredibly comfortable bed and a very nice bathroom. Our room was quiet (except for the sound of sea lions coming from the wharf) and clean. We sat with the sliding door open and loved the breeze. The nest morning when we were leaving we saw Wayne Carrini. This was the perfect overnight getaway and the hotel was a big part of it. We stayed on room 529, right down from the Presidential Suite.

Room Tip: Pay a little extra for an ocean view room. It is well worth it.

When we first arrived at the hotel, I was concerned that the rather grand surroundings may mean that our family (3 kids aged 8,6 and 1) may not be welcome. In reality, they could not have done more to make us welcome. The pirate treasure hunt was much enjoyed, as were the still-warm cookies! The staff in the restaurant in the evening were so friendly and accommodating that my husband and I were able to enjoy a delicious meal even with the kids in tow! The room we requested was accessible and perfectly met my disability requirements, and was still large enough for all of us to move about comfortably. The only thing that stops this from being an excellent review is that the breakfast served in the restaurant was incredibly busy and chaotic - too many people and nowhere near enough staff. Would certainly hope to visit again someday.
