This hotel was really lovely. From the moment we arrived staff were very friendly and helpful. We booked a king room which was ready for us at 1pm, earlier than expected. The room was very nice with a comfortable bed but I was absolutely amazed that there was no air conditioning in the room, just a ceiling fan. My own fault for not researching hard enough, I just expected that, when you're paying a decent amount for a hotel room, you should get air conditioning as standard. There was also a charge for wifi and parking, although I thought this was reasonable at under $20 per night.

The hotel is in a fantastic location, less than 5mins walk to the old fishermans wharf where you can catch the free trolley to cannery row.

The pool area is nice and secluded with quite a large spa tub. It was quite noisy when we were there as a lot of kids were enjoying the water. I would stay at this hotel again but not in summer!

Firstly, make sure you have a GPS or good directions to this hotel as the one way system makes it hard to find! Saying that, the location is amazing! Right in the middle of downtown with easy access to the beach, pier and coast path. It's not too far to walk down to Cannery Row which is also worth doing!

Stayed in the hotel as part of our trip along the PCH. Hotel is absolutely fine and I love the wide corridors that you don't often find in hotels these days. However, a few of the policies leave a bitter taste. Firstly the parking is astronomical and will automatically be charged unless you say you haven't parked in the hotel. Secondly, the wifi is not free. I don't understand how hotels can still charge for this?!

Room is fine although me and partner were put in two bed push together combo which is not the most comfortable. The ventilation is also a little ancient. I know this is a old-ish hotel by US standards (my house is older!) but given its location, it probably needs a little investment.

On the plus side, I definitely appreciated the cookie and check-in! Delicious!

After paying over $270 for one mid week night I was surprised to be asked to pay $9.95 for 24 hours of internet. Also surprised to asked to pay $2.00 per bottle for WATER in the room. We have been traveling the last month and this is the first time we had to pay for internet! If the Portola was Motel 6 I would understand....but it is a 3 star hotel and in today's world Internet should be included...just odd thinking on the part of the hotel management. Staff was good with quick check in good info on places to eat. Hotel is laid out with gym and pool across walkway/Fisherman's wharf access. Odd to see guests walking across this high traffic walkway in their swimming gear.

We had a delightful stay at the Portola Hotel & marveled at the friendly, cheerful & very professional staff. The hotel is beautiful, very clean & newly renovated. The location is the BEST! It's right on the water & in the heart of charming Monterey. The Concierge is top notch, knows her way around & gave us excellent advice from start to finish, sending us to all the perfect places that fit our preferences & needs. We could not have been more pleased. It was all so perfect & far exceeded our expectations.

This is not a hotel to stay at unless you are part of a large company conference and everything is on the company.

The hotel styling is very outdated and seriously needs maintenance/upgrading. In parts paint is coming off, wall tiling is jagged or incomplete and there is a lot of uncleared up seagull mess.

Our room was dark with no view and was seriously overlooked.

Very poor selection of TV channels and you have to pay for wifi (!!)

Front desk service is for the most part cold and impersonal. We left to go to the much smaller, cosier and personal Mission Inn in Carmel Valley.

The pool area is right next to the motorway which is so loud you can hear it through headphones with music on (not very relaxing...) Plus the pool is across the street from the actual hotel, so you have to cross over and get accosted by the various homeless people in the area (also not very relaxing).

The hotel is also super noisy (motorway + seagull combination).

All round not good.

We enjoyed our stay at this first class hotel. We had a corner room with a great view. The valet parking was a plus. We had lunch and dinner at Jack's and the food was great. The two day Aquarium Tickets was a plus.

Quasi luxurious surroundings and excellent location make this hotel a perfect choice to discover Monterrey.

We booked this hotel in last minute, so weren't too sure about what we would get. The reception staff was very good, made us feel welcome and offered some warm cookies.

We were given a large room with 2 king size beds, a massive flat screen TV, and a very spacious bathroom. All was decorated in a maritime style and we had a wonderful view on the bay.

Room service was also very good, everyone in the family was happy after a very long drive.

The hotel is located not far from the piers, which offer all sorts of sea food dishes, and an excellent seal watching spot.

The hotel also has one of the best equipped hotel gyms I have experienced in the states, as well as a spa.

We would return in this excellent hotel.
