Nice hotel, location and rooms but noisy. I could hear the person in next rrom cough and hear them turn the faucet on or the toilet flush. I booked on hotwire and got a good price but I would not stay there again if it were my choice

We choose to stay at The Portolla Spa & Hotel as we wanted to be "slightly", out of the main tourist area yet within walking distance to virtually all. We were throughly rewarded with not only a beautiful, friendly and georgeous Hotel, but a overall Hotel "find". We will not hesitate to return when in the area. Great place, Great people, Great location,

This hotel is a great hotel right in the heart of Monterey - Very relaxing and nice. The staff was great. I did find a few items (issues in the bathroom) as for cleanliness but all in all it was nice. The location is FANTASTIC.

HOTEL: Wonderful location and attentive staff in a "can't be beat" area of Monterey. There is so much to see and do around the Portola that it is actually a destination itself. The pool and fitness center is across the walkway from the hotel proper, but it was not really a big deal. And the Spa is located in the same set of buildings as the pool. The hotel staff will assist you in anything you need and they are GREAT!

We reserved the Aquarium package where your tickets are valid for 2 days and you received them at check-in at the hotel. We arrived at the hotel around 1:30 pm, checked in, dropped off our luggage (leaving our car in hotel driveway) and then drove straight to the Aquarium. I read online at the Aquarium website that the crowds are smaller between 2-6 pm and we found this to be true. We comfortably toured the entire Aquarium in 3 hours and enjoyed ourselves immensely.

HOTEL PARKING: I read on an earlier posting that public parking across the street (and somewhat down from hotel driveway) was only $7 per day, versus $20 (valet) or $17 self-park per day (unlimited in-out privileges) from the hotel. If you check into the hotel and plan to go out immediately and not come back until you are done driving for the night (like we did)- use the public parking lot (it has NO in-out privileges and you do have a small walk to the hotel). If you will be coming and going it makes far more sense to use the hotel parking (UNLIMITED in-out privileges). Also, don't pay for parking on the wharf - you can easily get there from the hotel (so you've already paid for parking!)

I would have rated the Portola 5 stars except for a couple of things:

1) I paid for a premium room advertised online as, "Each room offers a view of Monterey Bay" which costs $100 more than a deluxe room without the "bay view". However, our view on the 5th floor was obstructed by another hotel building - yes you COULD see the bay, but you had to look over the top of or around, the other hotel building. It wasn't the romantic "sit in your chair sipping wine and gaze at the view" I had hoped for, but hey, we still had a great time. IMHO just go the deluxe room route (plaza, garden & pool views) and save yourself some $$$$. Just know you will still get a gorgeous room.

2) We ate dinner and breakfast at Peter B's (main restaurant closed for renovations) and we found the dinner menu was definitely geared for Sports Bar eating and not fine dining (but has great beer!). Breakfast was surprisingly greasy regarding the eggs and potatoes. My advice would be to make the easy walk over to the wharf and have dinner (where you have a great view) and skip the fried breakfast stuff at Peter B's.

All in all, this is a wonderful hotel, spectacularly located on Fisherman's Wharf and Historical Walkway with the comfiest beds you will ever find. I highly recommend the Portola and do plan to stay there in the near future. And did I forget to mention that the staff is awesome??

Thank you for the review. We are very happy you were able to do many activities in Monterey while staying at the Portola Hotel. As for our parking, our rates are similar to those of other Monterey Hotels. Though Jacks was closed during your stay, we are reopening on Friday, January 29th with new items and a new menu. We are happy Portola Hotel made your stay great. We look forward to future visits.

We stayed here for my wife's 50th birthday and were treated like royalty by the staff. Our room was very comfortable and spacious with a great outdoor deck. The location can' t be beat.
