“Great location, wonderful staff, well appointed rooms and fabulous bed!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 October 2010

Spent 4 days on business and although I was working it felt like a vacation. Clean and stylish room with a great view, warm and caring staff made me feel right at home! Slept like a baby on a super comfortable bed with an abundance of pillows. Woke up refreshed and took my morning run right out to the walk, run and bike path from Fisherman's Wharf through Cannery Row, the Aquarium and up to Pacific Grove. Doesn't get any better for a runner! They have a great little brew pub, Peter B's, really good food, and the beer too. In Jack's, the other restaurant in the hotel, they have an awesome breakfast buffet with eggs, omelettes, made to order. Ready to go back, soon I hope!

An overnight to Monterey Ca turned out to be great thanks to the Portola Hotel and Spa. The location just can't be beat, park your car (we did valet and well worth only $3.00 more) and walk to all other attractions. The property was easy to find, extremely clean, the the staff of all levels were wonderful. They are really pet friendly for a moderate fee and well worth it.
Will certainly stay there again. The weather was fabulous, a real bonus.

From checking in to the hotel to the moment we left we could not have had a better time in Monterey. All of the staff at the Portola were so helpful, particularly Caitlin at the front desk, answering all of our questions, offering suggestions of food places to try/ things to see while we were there and really just going out of their way to help.
We were staying at the Portola on our honeymoon and we were lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite on the top floor which was beautiful (see photos) and they also sorted out tickets for us to the aquarium- a must see! It was just a short walk to Fishermans Wharf and even to Cannery Row from the hotel and the pool and hot tub across the plaza are great. A small detail that really impressed us was that the staff remembered our names- from reception to the valet who took our bags to our room as we checked in. We would definitly stay there again. And the warm cookies of check in are fab too!

We stopped for two night in The Portola and were very happy. Staff were excellent, hotel was clean and airy, and the location was perfect for a short two minute stroll to the Fisherman's Pier. In fact, it was the perfect stop-off on a journey South from SF to LA.
Rooms were also fairly large and comfortable, dinner was surprisingly good and the breakfasts were excellent value.

My Friends and I stayed here a couple of nights in September...The beds were so comfortable, we were all talking about them! The rooms are really nice, and I liked it that they had a refrigerator, not a minibar that charged you. The hotel was really close to the Fisherman's Wharf, and about a 20 minute walk to Cannery Row and the Aquarium. It was really a great vacation.

The Portola Hotel is an excellent hotel - it has exceptionally high standards, is very stylish and has a team of staff that just cant do enough for you. It is also a modern property and has the newly built feel.

This is my second stay and second review of Portola Plaza. My first stay was unsatisfactory largely because of the room I had on the ground floor. Although I had the same category of room on this stay (Portola Room) the third floor location with a full size window I could open without risking my life improved the quality of my stay immensely.

This hotel is not perfect, and I'm used to cheap rates for luxury in Vegas, so my $215 per night rate for an inferior room is a little hard to swallow. Still, there is much positive to be said about this hotel, and if you're in Monterey, and can get a good rate, I'd go for it.

The positives: By far the best thing about this hotel is the quality of the staff. Every single employee I encountered couldn't have been nicer or more eager to pleasel. For a hotel handling a large convention, I've rarely found staff to give the impression of personal care and attention at the level of Portola, from top to bottom. They really hire quality people here. Housekeeping, restaurants, front desk, manager, valet, bartenders, room service, phone operator, all just terrific.

This is a really nice location walking distance to the old wharf, with a shopping arcade connected, and conference center adjacent. Lots of local choices for food and entertaiment.

Bed was super comfortable and the standard room pretty sizeable. The public areas of the hotel are attractive and comfortable also with many little seating areas, lots of trees and art. Inside room and in common areas, the place is immaculate.

Cons: Most rooms aren't ideally located. Not many have views other than other buildings, the street, shopping arcade, or valet area. I guess the highest level rooms probably overlook the Bay, but in walking around and looking, I think most suffer from impaired views or excessive outside noise or both. There is no air conditioning and the rooms get stuffy during the day, so you have to open windows at least a bit. In doing so you will hear a LOT of noise from traffic, people talking, and your neighboring rooms TVs, toilets, doors, conversations etc.

It is really confusing to find your way around, especially if you are here for a conference like I was and you have to go between the hotel, conference center and Marriott across the way throughout the day. The hallways are a maze that seem to have no logic. You're walking down a hall, find yourself outside, and then in a row of rooms, then meeting rooms then stairs to goodness knows where. You need a compass and map to navigate this place, although there is plenty of signage.

I'm not a fan of tub/shower combos especially with shower curtains. I know they're common but it does spell "economy" to me in a hotel. Water pressure was poor. Toilets are indeed loud.

The craziest thing was the TV in my room. It changed channels at will. It was comical. The first night I thought I was going crazy. Every five minutes the TV changed from the show I was watching to Seinfeld. Every morning, I turned on NBC, but the TV preferred CBS and changed to it whenever I turned my back for a minute. I suspected my ex boyfriend was hiding under the bed. The TV had the same preferences, and the same obstinence about it.

Despite the cons I'd stay here again, because I really appreciated the great service and attention to customers needs being a priority. The location is also wonderful.
