“Really Enjoyed Our Stay”
Reviewed 1 August 2007

We only stayed one night, but the room was very nice - beds were very comfortable especially after a long day of driving and sight seeing. The staff was helpful in telling us where to go to enjoy food and drinks at a local pub. The location is within walking distance to everything. All that and some warm cookies at check in and a rubber seal on the bathtub :o). The soap and creams were Bath and Body Works- nice touch. There were some beautiful hotels by Cannery Row but obviously more than what we paid for at Portola Plaza Hotel. FYI - Parking is $18 per night extra for valet. Overall, great experience.

I stayed at the Portola Plaza for a large convention.
On the plus side, this is a great location very convenient to the pier and shopping. The staff was pretty polite, and the food in the restaurants and room service was good. They have a nice bar in the lobby that is comfortable and elegant, although service was sometimes lacking there as they were understaffed when it got busy.
As others have said there is a great variety amongst the rooms, and I wasn't too lucky in the one I got stuck with. It essentially had a view of people's feet and legs as it was below street level. As many have complained, the hotel is noisy, and you may need to make a choice between feeling stuffy without the a/c or opening the window to the street traffic racket.
I would stay there again if I could be assured a room on a higher floor with a balcony and a view of the water.

You know, I'm actually surpirsed at all the bad reviews I've seen for this property. We've stayed here several times throughout the years, and have never been anything but pleased. I'm a big rate-shopper, and HATE to pay more than I feel is worth it, so any time we're planning a trip to Monterey (we come at least once a year) I always do internet shopping prior to making reservations. Saying that, I have chosen to stay at Portola Plaza more times than not, even when their rates are not the best, simply because of the experiences we've had there. The last time we were there, my son was barely six weeks old, and the staff bent over backwards to make sure that our stay was pleasant and worry free. I had requested a mini fridge for storing his milk and such, and was happily surprised to see it in our room at check in. Granted, I do agree with previous reviewers that this would be a nice addition to at least the Deluxe grade rooms and above, but I wasn't put off by paying the extra money. Having stayed there multiple times, here are some tips:
Don't stay in one of the standard rooms. Those are the ones that have the most noise complaints. The upgrade to the deluxe room is $14 per night, and your sanity is well worth it.
If you have sleeping issues, or small children, let the reservation specialist know, and also reconfirm at check in. If you ask for the more quiet side of the hotel, they will accomodate you to the best of their ability.
Stay during the week, if possible. Not only will the hotel be more quiet, there are less tourists around during the week, and it makes seeing the attractions MUCH easier.
While paying the extra money ($18 now!) for valet parking does chap my financial sensibilities, I find that - with a small child - it is well worth it. You usually don't have to wait for very long for your car if you call down from your room to the valet desk and let them know you are leaving.
Buy your tickets for the Aquarium at the Concierge or at the Front Desk. This allows you to completely skip the lines at the doors, and go through the group entrance. Virtually no waiting. The tickets they provide are also for two days, not just one, for the same price.
Check the property's website before making reservations. Sometimes they really do have the best rates. On the last trip we took, we got the End of Summer Special where we paid $159 per night for a Deluxe King room, which was a savings of almost $100 off the rack rates. Also, the big websites don't often list the rates for anything above the standard grade rooms, so you don't get to see all your choices.
I don't know if I would classify this as a 4 star hotel, but the location and the ease of getting places with a small child far outweigh the higher cost for me. It's just so convenient! We're actually going back again to this hotel during the beginning of fall, and are thoroughly anticipating our stay!

The best thing about the hotel is the great location near the warf and within walking distance of many area attractions. In retrospect, there are other hotels nearby that I stay in if I returned. Three times during two separte nights of our stay we were awaken by a false fire alarm. There were no apologies from the staff and there was no consideration given.

The rooms and bathrooms were nothing special and could just as easily been found in a $75 per night hotel. Cleanliness was spotty. The hotel overcharged for parking but quickly fixed it (check the bill). All in all this was a disappointing experience.

Cheapist rate was through hotel website-other sites wanted to charge extra 40.00 for additional persons in room(2 kids).

Clean large room. Friendly staff. Good location for Old fisherman's Wharf-right across street. Enjoyed aquarium. whale watching, Cannery row, 17 mile drive....all very close.

Would use again!!

We stayed at Four Seasons from San Fran to LA, and were a little nervous about staying at the Portolo Plaza, but were pleasantly surprised by this nice hotel. From a greeting that was actually better than we got at the Four Seasons Wilshire, to clean rooms that were as good or better than advertised, we would stay here again. We are very demanding guests, and this hotel impressed us. Thanks!
