“How unusual”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 December 2009

I opened my door on Sunday morning, and there was a child standing there.

"Are you anyone important?" the child asked.
"So . . . why should I tell you that?" I replied.
"Because my parents told me if we stayed here, we would see celebrities."

Trust me, celebrities wouldn't stay here -- but business people do. And you get used to people staring at of you for no apparent reason at this hotel.

Other than that it's a nice place.

If I had to mention anything negative, it would be the horrid parking situation. The property is adjacent to Monterey Peninsula College and cannot expand it's parking lots. But as I found out, on weekends when all the rooms are filled by tourists, you might wind up in the hotel's remote overflow parking lot.

Not exactly business-friendly, but what are you going to do? Not a bad place, but definitely one of the more exotic properties I've visited in my life.

We chose this hotel because of the positive reviews on Tripadvisor for hotels in our price category. With hindsight, I wish we'd just paid the extra and stayed elsehwere.
POSITIVES:
- Free parking
- Decent location, approx 15 mins walk to Fisherman's Wharf, 20 to downtown and 35 to Cannery Row.
NEGATIVES:
- Outdated concrete building.
- We were given a room with a view of an electricity pylon/college car park
- There was a pubic hair on the bed when we first arrived
- There was a squashed fly on the wall which the cleaners are probably never likely to clean off
- Sink plughole wouldn't stay down
- Towels smell of strong bleach
- Very poor shower pressure
- Cold bathroom
- Non portable hairdryer (i.e. you can only use in the bathroom)
- Noisy heating system
- Poilte but ungenuine staff (i.e. go through the motions and no more)
We would have been happy to have communicated all of this to a member of staff on checkout, if they had the courtesy to ask us how our stay had been,

Under no circumstances would we consider staying here again.

My husband and Istayed there for 2 nights and were very dissapointed. Very different than the website. They rave about there sleep system..each side of the bed can have its own firmness or softness..one side of our bed was saggy the whole time. Tv's are old flat screens with huge backs on them. Had to have the tech come when we first got there because our pay per view movies ordering kept freezing up. Did it alot during our stay..we just learned to un plug all of it and that did the job. But was really a pain. Also maid tried to come in at 830 am even with do not distrub sign on the door and than again an hour later. We made a local call..1 mile down the road and were charged 75 cents. Just wanted to get out of there. Staff just said sorry..didnt really care! Will NEVER stay here again!! Oh and they only had room service in the evenings from like 6-10..no breakfast or lunch.

We stayed at this hotel passing through from LA to San Fran. The hotel is easy to find and relatively central, although you wouldn't want to walk down to the main pier at night.

The hotel is built in a circular fashion with the rooms around the outside and car park underground. There is a bar at the reception which unfortuneately closed at 9:30pm when we were there. The room itself was excellent, it had a microwave and fridge, the room was spacious and modern with a very comfortable bed.

There's free starbucks coffee at reception in the morning although we couldn't see any breakfast options. The staff were very helpful and pleasant, as were the other guests.

Overall if I was going back to Monterey I would definately stay here again.

Pleasant hotel and room. Balconies overlooking lovely pool in the centre of the motel. Very clean. Laundry facilities were useful. Impressed. Staff helpful.

My boyfriend and I really wanted to check out Big Sur and the Monterey Bay area. We originally had reservations at a place in Big Sur. Unfortunatly Big Sur had been hit by a big storm and many of the hotels in that area were without power and hot water, so we decided to head back to Monterey and find a more "commercial and reliable place to stay. The Garden Inn was perfect. Its centrally located in Monterey (about 3 miles from the Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay aquarium) and about 20 miles from the Big Sur area. I personally thought the hotels in the Big Sur area were either REALLY overpriced, or really crappy (no TV, no internet, lotsa bugs etc). The Garden Inn was really comfortable and resonably priced for the area and still close to the areas we were interested in. The beds were very comfy and the breakfasts were very tasty!!!! In my opinion, Id rather stay at a nicer more comfortable place and have to drive a bit further, then stay closer in accomdations that are no where near as nice. Besides, the drive down to Big Sur along the coast was absolutly gorgeous. I have been around the world and back and Big Sur has some of the most beautful coasal scenary I have ever seen!

Stayed here while attending the Monterey Jazz Festival. It was in a good location, close to everything. Rooms were nicely appointed. Free Wi-Fi. Exercise facility had a lot of equipment. Front desk was very attentive. Nice hotel at a reasonable price.
