our family usually stays further out and drives to aquarium. This place was great for our family! It was a brief walk to everything and we only got in our car one day to go to carmel.we walked all over cannery row! Staff was very friendly and helpful. Definitely recommend for families. I thought since our room faced the busy street it would be too loud for our 1 and 3 year old. The staff stated it would quiet down at night and it did. Lots of families and we didn't hear one peep when in our room. Rooms are very nice remodeled. overall we had a GREAT stay!!

How very nice to hear that you enjoyed your stay so much! I'm so glad that you were able to take advantage of our convenient location... I agree with you, being able to walk anywhere you want to go is one of the best things about being on vacation. And I'm delighted to hear that your children liked the hotel as well. Thanks SO much for taking the time to share this with us. We really appreciate it, and hope that you will stay with us again soon!

We weren't sure what to expect, from the outside it appears to be a refurbished motel. The rooms (mostly) are open to the outside court yard.

We stayed 3 nights while visiting the area on vacation. There were 4 adults, two rooms. The first night we were on the first floor. The room temperature was hard to control with the window unit. There seemed to be a cool breeze around the edges of the door.
We then requested a 3rd floor room and the temperature was easier to control with the wall unit.

The rooms are very nicely redone. Great modern, up-to-date fixtures and furnishings. Everything appeared brand new. Refrigerator in the room is very helpful. Very clean!

The breakfast area is well done and the egg selection changed each day. We were able to take advantage of the free wine and cheese on the first night. Coffee/tea is available in the lobby 24/7.

Location is great for walking to the restaurants and to the aquarium. Lots of shopping and sight seeing too.

One downfall was the employee who took his smoking break in the courtyard. We were told the hotel was totally smoke free, and it seemed to be; but to have the employee stand there smoking with the door to the front desk area wide open was crazy! We got up and closed the door. Think he got the message!

Parking is underneath and was available at all times. Did not use the hot tub, spent too much time out checking out the area!

This was the first time we stayed at a Holiday Inn Express and I was pleasantly surprised. The room was clean...the beds were very comfortable and everything looked pretty new. . I liked that it was close to cannery row. We walked everywhere. The breakfast was good and kept well stocked. Even the cheese, crackers and wine was nice. I would definitely stay there again if i get back to Monterey. We also spoke a few times with Arbeen at the front desk for information on what to do and where to go. He was very helpful and enjoyable to talk with...so ask for him if you visit.

We went from San Fran to Monterey without pre-booking. We arrived at night and found this hotel by GPS. We knew that Holiday Inn Expresses are reliable. We certainly weren't disappointed. Comfy beds, great service, decent free breakfast (but FREE), wine and cheese (FREE). It was under construction but that didn't make a difference to us. Parking was free and location was great. Only one block to the "main strip". Will return there in a heartbeat.

That is so cool that your road trip was such a success - and that it led you to us!! We're certainly glad that it did. Thanks SO much for the great review, and I'm so glad that the construction didn't inconvenience you (it's almost done... and I think definitely worth the effort and temporary mess). Please do come stay with us again next time you're in Monterey!

If you are very rich and want to spend a lot of money for hotels,
please stay at intercontinental nearby where you will be charged for parking
and have no breakfast.
If you are not, I think that this hotel gives you everything to enjoy Monterey.

Our favorite place to stay, anywhere! It's very quiet but practically on Cannery Row, walking distance to the Aquarium, Pacific Grove, "Old Monterey", and beyond--also near a major bus line that goes to the transit center from which you can get just about anywhere. The hotel itself has gotten even better with a major room renovation starting around 2009, using a lot of environmentally sustainable materials and with really well-designed furniture. We give them high marks for sustainable use of natural resources in the rooms, too. We hope that they will now turn their attention to sustainability questions at breakfast, beyond the official recyling bin.

Thank you so much, it is so very nice to be appreciated! So glad that you like our remodel... and would be more than happy to tackle the breakfast service next!

However, it is a very unfortunate reality for us that the cost of using china, glassware, and stainless steel at breakfast is completely prohibitive (given all of the regulations, etc. that we're required to follow). Believe me, I would like nothing better than to eliminate the paper waste at breakfast, even if it is biodegradable!! Any ideas are VERY welcome... drop me an email if you have one? (stephanie.howard@hilton.com).

Thanks again for writing in, we do so appreciate your feedback. Come and see us again soon!

We stayed in this hotel for one night while visiting Monterey. I chose it because we changed our plans shortly before our trip and could not get the hotel we previously booked at the same rate. I chose it because it was close to Cannery Row and the Aquarium and it had free underground parking. It also has free continental breakfast, which was actually pretty nice. The rooms looked like they had been recently refurbished. When I went to close the drapes, I learned that there were no drapes. There were sheer curtains that covered the entire window, but the heavier curtains where only about 3 feet wide. You could not shut out the light. I have never seen this in a hotel. I suppose it saved them some money on their refurbishing, but it's not great if you are concerned about privacy, or you want to sleep later than sunrise. The other concern I have with this hotel is their lack of emergency lighting. We had a series of power outages while we were staying there due to damage to a utility pole in a car accident. The hotel rooms are situated around an open courtyard with a patio in the middle. Ours was on the 3rd floor. When we went out of the room, there was no emergency lighting anywhere in the courtyard or in the halls outside the rooms. We had to climb down a set of stairs to get to the internal staircase, which did have battery-powered emergency lighting. It struck me as dangerous. We used our cell phones to navigate the unlighted staircase.

Oh, and things started out so well, too!

I'm so sorry to hear about these two issues... we absolutely do supply a good set of black-out drapes in each of our rooms, and can't imagine how it is that you weren't able to access yours! We have just recently had the draperies replaced in all of the rooms, and can only guess that something may have been overlooked in your room (?)... it would be a really great help to us if you could send me an email at stephanie.howard@hilton.com and let me know which room you stayed in so that we can further investigate. We completely understand the need for darkness to get a good night's sleep, and really apologize for this! In the future, please call down to the front desk if anything like this happens in our or any hotel, so that someone can assist you.

Regarding the outdoor emergency lighting... in the ten years that we've owned the hotel we cannot readily recall another incident where this has been a problem, and since there is no code or standard requiring exterior emergency lighting we've never had to manage this kind of thing before. So sorry for the inconvenience - we're very glad to know that you were able to navigate the walkways safely.

I do hope that you will give the hotel another try, we do our very best to make our guests comfortable and safe and would really love to have you back another time, when surely these two things will not be any kind of issue!
