“Quite an unexpected find...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 June 2009

I picked this hotel based on other reviews I read on TripAdvisor and I was very happy with my choice! In the very over-priced and expensive Monterey area, the Mariposa had the only reasonable rates with a touch of modern elegance. Our room was small....the king bed didn't leave much floor space available...but full of unexpected amenities. At every turn I could see the thought and care taken into providing comfort to their guests: bathrobes, soft sheets, extra blankets, ipod player alarm clock, etc. I was quite surprised at the amount of goodies they were able to pack into the small room.

The bed was quite comfortable and noise from the road was not a problem. What I particularly liked was the skylight in the ceiling. Again, thinking about their guests' comfort: the main window in the room looks out onto the walkway in the bog-standard motel style, so one is able to close the curtains for privacy yet still have lots of natural light flowing into the room. Just great!

The staff were friendly and helpful. I didn't swim in the pool yet it looked inviting.

Overall, a very pleasant stay for a very decent price.

Wow. Very nice room (one queen room is small, but adequate). Even though room was near the street - no complaints about noise as in earlier review. Staff friendly with excellent restaurant recommendations. Wide variety of good quality food for breakfast. Excellent value and even better with AARP rate.

Having spent a two wonderful days with my girlfriend in and around Monterey we can thoroughly recommend the Mariposa Inn and can only echo the positive comments people have previously written. The room, service, complimentary breakfast, location, rate etc, etc…. everything was great.

The only negative thing of note was that our room was near the hotel entrance and a communal walkway (laid out like a typical motel) and a few people kindly decided to have prolonged, loud chats directly outside our room at 1am and then again at 6am. Although this was obviously not the fault of the hotel it may be worth requesting a quieter room in the complex (i.e. nearer the pool) so ask for one of them.

We stayed at this hotel for one night on May 21. We were upgraded to a king suite because the girl said I had made the reservation a while ago. It's true, I booked back in early April. The front counter girl was super nice and gave us menus to a service that provided food from any local restaurant. Please be aware that it takes about an 1 hr to get food. The food from Rosine's was great. I highly recommend.

Our room was quiet, we were overlooking the pool and garden area. I did like how our room was quiet and you couldn't hear your neighbor. When we arrived we saw a family with an infant and toddler stay in the room next to us. I immediately thought we would hear the baby scream or cry. Nope, it was a quiet night. We were traveling with a 2 year old who is very active but with the extended space in our room, he had his own tv and a play area for his toys.

My only compliant about the room was the fridge, it took a while for it to cool after the setting had to be placed on max, so perhaps that fridge needs to be checked out or something.

Across the way from the hotel is a shopping center (Del Monte Shopping Center) with a Whole Foods, Rite Aid, Islands Restaurant, Pottery Barn and a couple different places that I didn't see.

The free breakfast was great and it's enough to fill you up and start your day. The coffee was good and the juices were fresh. They have a person in the room refilling everything so you don't feel like you are getting leftovers.

I recommend anyone with young kids to visit Estero Park, they have a huge playground called Dennis the Menance Playground. There have a train display kids can climb on and climbing structures for little tykes and older kids. We arrived when it opened (10am) and a group of 4 or 5th graders arrived at the same time and we almost turned around and left but after we saw how big it was, we stayed. The school tour left and we in the park with other parents and their kids. It was a great place for our two year old to use some of his energy before we went sightseeing.

Overall, I highly recommend this hotel and we will be back when were in Montetrey again.

I chose this hotel based solely on Tripadvisor reviews and we were not dissapointed! We stayed at the Mariposa May 15-17 in room 111 (single king). Check in was fast, the girl at the front desk was very friendly and even asked if we had AAA to give an additional discount. Free internet for your room or you can even use the computer w/ printer in the lobby free of charge. The room is modernly decorated, cozy and comfortable. Free continental breakfast each morning from 7-10am which consists of tasty (not the cheap gas station stuff!) pastries, yogurt, bananas, coffee, juices, tea and oatmeal. There's someone attending to the breakfast so it isn't a complete mess.

Our only complaint was the skylight in the room which made it very difficult to sleep in. Also, I don't think the hotel has air conditioning? You may want to call ahead to confirm. You can hear slight noise outside but not anything unbearable. Those issues didn't really affect us, we needed to get up early each day and the weather was mild enough to not need air conditioning or heating.

Overall Mariposa is a GREAT value. We were very happy and will return.

We stayed at the Mariposa for 2 nights in early May 2009. Selena, at the front desk, was very nice, giving us a discount that I hadn't been sure we qualified for, a great dinner recommendation (Lalla Grill - best nachos I've ever had), and coupons for several stores and restaurants at the shopping mall across the street. Our room was small but newly appointed. A large skylight provided an airy feel, but also made it quite bright early in the morning. There is a greenspace across the street that makes for a nice jogging area.
