Based on the reviews on this site and the pricing we were expecting a charming stay for the finale of a road trip around California. As some others have noted, the location is very convenient for the Aquarium which was good for us but the other aspects of Cannery Row were depressing and tacky. The view from our second floor (uk: first floor) ocean facing room were enjoyable and the staff pleasant and helpful. We also enjoyed the wine reception and the atmosphere in the lobby.

We're grading this three stars because of the room and the breakfast. We found our room cramped and a bit dated. The bed was two singles pushed together which was strange. We don't expect to have to pay for drinking water from a mini bar when the room tariff is already expensive and there is nowhere to buy reasonably priced bottled water in the vicinity. Breakfast in the room was not very nice and inconvenient.

We are appreciative of your comments and want to thank you for sharing your feedback. While we are thrilled to hear your kind words regarding our staff, we were disappointed to hear that your Monterey experience did not meet your expectations. We can assure you that all of our rooms do offer King Beds, however a king bed does require two separate box springs, which we believe you are referring to. We do offer our guest’s mini bar options as a convenience and are disappointed that you did not enjoy this amenity along with our complimentary breakfast delivery. We find that most of our guests like to enjoy breakfast in the luxury of their own room or on their balconies to soak up the fantastic views. Thank you again for taking the time to post your feedback, as it provides us with our best opportunity to continually improve.

Warmest Regards,

Management of the Inns of Monterey

Great place, great location, great staff and great rooms. Cozy rooms with a fireplace and feather-top beds. We liked our room so much that one night we opted to buy dinner to-go and bring it back so we could optimize our time there! Street side is a little noisy, so spring for the ocean view. It's worth it. We will next time!

This little boutique hotel is absolutely wonderful. We had a beautiful sumptuous room complete with fireplace and a big bay window overlooking the ocean. The sound of waves at night is very soothing. The wonderful staff couldn't be better

I have to say this was a great place to stay. But for me the big down fall was I did not know there was no parking there. So they will park your car for you in a parking garage for you a block away. Just be aware that every-time you wan't your car you will be giving a tip. To top that that off they will charge you for parking at the end of your stay. That's the only resin I gave a 4 star. I was not told that, I thought it was with the room. But all in all it was as it should be a great place. We were pampered and treat like kings & queens. Breakfast was brought to our room. Make sure you ask for a ocean view they have a fireplace. It is pricey tho but well worth it.

Located in the 'cannery wharf' area of Monterey, this little boutique hotel is very well done and complimented by the personal touch of its staff. From check-in to check-out, the place feels like you are visiting your grand parents place- you feel like everything has been sorted out for your visit and is very homely and comfortable.

We were impressed by this hotel and encourage you to check it out if you want an alternative to the typical hotel chain offers. . . . When was the last time you had a fireplace in your room and a nice balcony to watch the people go by in this little village?

The only regret I have is that we did not stay longer. Spent the night here from Yosemite to head for Vegas the next day.

Booked 2 rooms where my wife and I stayed in an ocean view. First time we slept with an open window (can't do this in our country) and just fell asleep with the sound of gentle splashing waves. It was very soothing! The fireplace in the room was an added treat!

Location was perfect! Shops and restaurants are right beside the hotel. Will definitely stay here again.

We live near enough to Carmel/Monterey to visit regularly, but never splurged before on a waterside hotel. Finally did in April of 2014, and it was worth it! The Spindrift Inn is on Cannery Row and half the rooms look over the Bay. The sea view rooms cost extra, so you decide, but we were glad we reserved one.

The room we had was spacious, although filled with a bit too much furniture in an attempt to pamper your every whim. The lighting is dim (this is billed as a "romantic" Inn) so reading is difficult. The bathroom is well appointed, and some rooms have a bathtub. Rooms have a fireplace and wide screen TV. The window seat was lovely, and I used it frequently, to observe the sea animals, check out the changing weather patterns and watch the cruise boats coming to and fro. I also took my breakfast to the window as often as I sat at the table to eat it.

There is no breakfast room at the hotel, so you are offered a continental breakfast delivered to your room each morning, at a time of your choosing. You fill out a slip the night before and hang it on your doorknob. It is a list of what is on offer, and you check what you want. We had yogurt, a hard-boiled egg, fresh fruit, coffee, and cereal each day. There also are pastries, toast and other items that we don't eat. It is luxurious to sit in your bathrobe and have breakfast while on vacation.

There are plenty of photos of the hotel itself on their web site, and they are accurate, so I only posted one of the pics I took looking out our window one morning. We watched the otters in the water every morning while we had breakfast. There also were cormorants fishing for their own breakfast, and a beautiful sunrise to watch, it being April and the sun being north on the horizon. There is a narrow beach in front of the hotel, but it doesn't invite strolling as it is cut off on both ends either by a rocky shore or more structures out over the water. Still, if you have children and it is warm, they could splash about there and enjoy it. The wave action is calm.

The actual street where the inn (and a few others) is located, Cannery Row, is an historic area, but nothing John Steinbeck wrote about remains. It is very touristy-tacky for the most part, with souvenir shops, T-shirt shops and junk food for sale all down the street. There is an attempt at an English Pub across the street from the Spindrift. There are a couple of pricey shops selling watches or contemporary art, but really nothing else to see or do. There is some good dining to be found if you look for it, though. The reason we had for staying at the Spindrift was the presence of the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium located a two-minute walk down the street from the Spindrift Inn. Just being able to walk there at opening time, without hassling a drive or trying to find parking, was a very nice change for us.

"Parking" reminds me to give you a heads up: There is no parking near the Inn, so they offer Valet Parking for guests -- but it is not free. They did not do enough to call this to our attention, either when we booked or checked in, but it adds $25/day to the cost of your stay. The total cost for the three nights we stayed was $875. Still, I would do it again if I wanted to visit the Aquarium. Definitely convenient, and a lovely place to stay. Oh, and yes -- "Romantic."

Room Tip: If you take a room on the street side, they have a balcony. However, the street traffic and pedestri...
