“Good for couples, not families”
Reviewed 24 October 2010

We stayed at this hotel on a recent holiday in Monterey. It has a lot of positives including its location in Cannery Row with a small clean beach right in front of the hotel and a short walk to the aquarium. The hotel and our room were also very well presented in a semi-ornate style and the valet and front desk staff were very helpful. The room was also very clean and well maintained. It overlooked the ocean and there was a lovely bay window with cushions so we could sit and watch the waves. However, there were three reasons for which we’d try somewhere else next time. Ours was a party of two adults and one child so I thought that booking a room with two queen beds would be fine. However, the beds were very small, in fact I’d say they were more like doubles and so just very uncomfortable. They also had thick European style mattress toppers which didn’t reach the edge of the bed so it meant there was a bit of a slope at each side so it felt like you were falling out with two in the bed. Secondly, breakfast is also described as being delivered on a silver tray which makes it sound like it’s going to be wonderful but it’s not. It’s pretty plain with yoghurt, fruit, commercial cereals, bagels/muffins and drinks. They could do so much better in keeping with the European image and offer gourmet or organic cereals, breads, meats, fruit and cheese etc. Further, our breakfast was either delivered by someone who was very noisy or quite surly and they got the order wrong on two of three mornings. Lastly, access to the internet is really patchy. Sometimes it worked fine and other times there was nothing, and it cost $10-12 a day depending on the option you chose. You are better off going across the road to Starbucks where it is free and fast.

So if you are travelling in a pair and get a king room with an ocean view and don’t care much about breakfast or the internet, then this would be a great place. But it was not a good option for us.

Thank you very much for your comments; all guest feedback is truly appreciated and considered quite valuable. We would like to first note how genuinely gratifying it is when the effort we put into the cleanliness and maintenance of our hotel is acknowledged. Thank you very much for ranking those aspects of our hotel highly.
That being said, we are very disappointed to hear that this guest had a less than wonderful time while staying with us. It is our mission to provide an environment committed to personal, attentive service, and we regret any instance where a guest does not experience this.

Regarding this reviewer’s disappointment with their bed; the beds in our rooms with two queens are 60”x80”, which is the standard measurement for a queen size mattress. Most king beds are larger in width by about 6”. For those uncomfortable on a queen sized bed, those extra 6” can mean a lot. Unfortunately those few rooms we have with two beds would be overwhelmed by two kings, so we use two queens for those guests that require a two-bedded option. We do also have a feather topper on all of our beds, which is easily removed. For those that prefer a firmer sleep surface, this may not always be satisfying. We regret that we were not aware of this guest’s discomfort; we would have removed the topper immediately so that they could have enjoyed the rest of their say in comfort.

In an effort to keep our hotel current, we have a project to update our Wi-Fi service scheduled for January/February of next year, which will improve the quality of our internet service. And in regard to the remarks on our complimentary continental breakfast, we are constantly assessing what we serve to our guests and we will seriously consider this feedback in our ongoing evaluation of this service.

Lastly, we very much want to apologies for any miscommunication with our staff. These comments have been shared with our managers and staff so that appropriate actions can be taken.

We would very much like the chance to welcome back any of our guests – both those who have had a great time, and those we may not have impressed the first time – so that we might demonstrate how very dedicated we are to providing excellent service. Should any guest have an issue that they would like to speak directly to a manager about, please do not hesitate to give us a call.
Thank you again; all comments and feedback are greatly appreciated.

I agree with the fact that the website doesn't quite do The Spindrift Inn justice. The Spindrift Inn was wonderful. The room itself was very nice, luxurious and stylish. I loved the really soft bed, but my husband prefers something with more support. We really enjoyed the fireplace and the view of the ocean - the binoculars they provided were a great touch. The location was great - right on Cannery Row within easy walking distance of great restaurants, shops and the aquarium. Having breakfast delivered to the room in the morning was a great treat. The afternoon wine and cheese reception in the lobby was also welcome after a day of sightseeing. The staff was friendly, helpful and attentive. All in all a great experience and we're already planning a return visit.

The hotel itself was in great condition. I almost feel like the website doesn't do it justice. I was expecting a slightly aged joint with tacky furniture but what I got was completely different. Very nice, modern, and comfortable rooms. I stayed in a Oceanfront room and it was unreal, you could have told me we were on a boat and I would believe it because the water was so close!

Very cool rooftop terrace with nice views of Monterrey and the ocean, equipped with trendy yet comfortable patio furntiture. It's a great little secret within the hotel.

Staff was friendly and helpful, even had a wine and cheese event for the vistiors.

Location was hard to beat, right in the middle of everything. Plenty of places to eat, shop, and just hang out.

I haven't ever been in a streetview unit, but I would highly recommend the Oceanview, it's great.

Also, the free/delivered breakfast was fresh and nice portions.

Big fan of this Place!

This is our favorite place to stay. In the heart of Cannery Row you are within walking distance of everything. Staff is great. They left a special gift and card in our room for my birthday and even sprang for our dessert at the nearby restaurant. It was fabulous, again.

This hotel was awesome and I am sad that we only were able to stay 1 night as we were on a road trip from L.A to San Francisco. We arrived on the afternoon of the Monterey Jazz Festival and were treated to wine and cheese in the lobby great welcome! If you want tofind out what sleeping on a cloud is like try the four poster beds at this hotel- bliss!!!!!
We were treated to breakfast in our room the next morning and we ate this while looking out over the bay and watching the fishing boats heading off to work for the day.
Monterey is a lovely place and I would love to come back one day. Thankyou Spindrift for a lovely stay.

We just returned from staying at the Spindrift for 4 nights. We were very impressed with the service and room. The room is a victorian style setup, smaller than most hotels but IMO much better. At night, you can open the windows if you have bay side room and listen to the seals, seagulls, and waves. The people at the hotel were very polite and helped with anything we needed. Renae at the front desk was without a doubt one of the best assets the hotel has. She is very helpful. The bell hops and car parking attendees also were extremely polite and always helpful. The spindrift IMO is the best place to stay if you want to really experience cannery row since it is located right in the middle of the action. We travel a lot and have stayed at many hotels and the spindrift is well worth the price and stands out about others.

We loved this place. From the start the staff were hospitable and helpful. We had a room across from Cannery row but could still hear the sounds from the ocean. There was also a charming window seat and large window so we could look out onto the historic street. The room was large and featured a charming fire place. The bed was amazing, so comfortable. The breakfast isn't huge but cereal, fresh fruit, yoghurt and bagels were a refreshing change from a lot of the greasy breakfasts offered in some places. If you are going to stay in Monterey, this place is ideal. An idyllic joy!
