We stayed at this hotel on a recent holiday in Monterey. It has a lot of positives including its location in Cannery Row with a small clean beach right in front of the hotel and a short walk to the aquarium. The hotel and our room were also very well presented in a semi-ornate style and the valet and front desk staff were very helpful. The room was also very clean and well maintained. It overlooked the ocean and there was a lovely bay window with cushions so we could sit and watch the waves. However, there were three reasons for which we’d try somewhere else next time. Ours was a party of two adults and one child so I thought that booking a room with two queen beds would be fine. However, the beds were very small, in fact I’d say they were more like doubles and so just very uncomfortable. They also had thick European style mattress toppers which didn’t reach the edge of the bed so it meant there was a bit of a slope at each side so it felt like you were falling out with two in the bed. Secondly, breakfast is also described as being delivered on a silver tray which makes it sound like it’s going to be wonderful but it’s not. It’s pretty plain with yoghurt, fruit, commercial cereals, bagels/muffins and drinks. They could do so much better in keeping with the European image and offer gourmet or organic cereals, breads, meats, fruit and cheese etc. Further, our breakfast was either delivered by someone who was very noisy or quite surly and they got the order wrong on two of three mornings. Lastly, access to the internet is really patchy. Sometimes it worked fine and other times there was nothing, and it cost $10-12 a day depending on the option you chose. You are better off going across the road to Starbucks where it is free and fast.
So if you are travelling in a pair and get a king room with an ocean view and don’t care much about breakfast or the internet, then this would be a great place. But it was not a good option for us.
