If you have an opportunity in Monterey, you should eat on the wharf at a window table for some excellent scenery: boats, sea lions, soaring birds, maybe a sea otter or two. We saw all.
Gilbert's met our expectations, but they could have done a little better.
First the good things. We both ordered a fish lunch, and the fish in both cases was seemingly fresh, well prepared and tasty. As were the mixture of vegetables.
Our only issue was that our two meals on the menu came with rice, but we instead got mashed potatoes. And in a peeve that I personally carry, the fish was mashed down onto the mashed potatoes. It was hard to separate the two.
The scenery and interior environment was very good.
Our waiter had issues -- not bringing my wife's water with the lemon she requested in advance and never bringing us the bread that he himself offered us. Another waiter willingly obliged us when asked.
Prices were reasonable for our lunches and the setting.
While I only rank at a "3", I don't think you'll do much better in this rather touristy area of the Monterey Wharf.
